Sometime after the Battle of Naboo, Saché (Sofia Coppola) starts to deteriorate. She lost family in the war against the Trade Federation, and as Nute Gunray escapes punishment again and again, she becomes depressed and desperate and turns to drugs to numb the pain. All the Handmaidens are saddened and concerned, but Sabé (Keira Knightly) was particularly close with her and takes it hardest.

After the attack on her life that resulted in Cordé’s death, and the defeat of her deescalation bill, Padmé (Natalie Portman) is close to the edge and Dormé (Rose Byrne) fears she’s flirting with the same disasters that befell Saché. She enlists Sabé to help her find Padmé and bring her home. Where they all fall into bed together to prove they are alive. 

Primary pairing is Padmé/Dormé, with Padmé/Dormé/Sabé happening here, but from the beginning, all the handmaidens have a comfortable polyamorous arrangement. Sadly, I had no additional footage of actresses who played the other handmaidens. Parminder Nagra and Shazmay Lewis are meant to be handmaidens we haven’t met in canon, but Mila Kunis is a body double for Dormé and/or Sabé. Footage from Bend It Like Beckham, Sometimes Salvation, and The Phantom Menace takes place in the past, footage from Black Swan, X-Men: First Class, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, and Attack of the Clones takes place in the present.

Thanks everyone for your support, I really do appreciate it!! This community has been so creative, encouraging, and positive- aren’t we lucky? This year is also the 20 YEAR ANNIVERSARY of The Phantom Menace, and we are finally getting a LEGITIMATE PADME NOVEL featuring handmaidens. I can’t even believe it tbh!! lol

hi! do you have any thoughts/ speculation as to why the heads at Disney wanted to have a book that focuses on Amidala stepping down and becoming Senator, as opposed to a book about Amidala actually being Queen? I'm SO HAPPY that we're getting this one about Padme + her handmaidens, but I feel kinda sad we won't get to see her dealing with the problems of ruling a planet in her prime as Queen (or do we...?) Also, do you have any fanfic recs that fill the void in the meantime? thanks!

Hello @reyes0fsunshine!! Good question- I’m really not sure and I don’t know a ton about the YA Genre tbh… I suppose there is a “coming of age” element to it with her transitioning from Queen to Senator, so maybe that’s part of it? Idk. 

I also was initially hoping it would be set closer to TPM and focus on her reign (it’s just my favorite era for handmaidens and I love Naboo so much), so I felt a bit disappointed when it was revealed it wouldn’t be. However, the beginning of Queen’s Shadow does have some sections that FELT like how that type of book would go, at least to me. So I think you’ll really enjoy those chapters, as I did. Hopefully if Queen’s Shadow is successful enough there will be more content to come too!! And we can get something centered around TPM era. 

As for fan fiction, I admit I’m only just starting to get back into “reading for fun” after years long “reader’s block”~ so I’m not at all caught up on fan fiction. I do have a tag for it on here, and I will try to reblog more soon. Click here

@milverton hello, glad to have you here! I think you’re gonna enjoy Queen’s Shadow then!! 😄 You absolutely do learn more about each of the handmaidens, what goes on behind the scenes, and their dynamic with Padme. It’s quite a thoughtfully constructed book tbh because as I continue to think back on it, I’m struck by new connections in how it enriches the PT. Please let me know if you post your thoughts on it, I’d love to read your take!

Hi! So I was very young when TPM came out and I had NO idea what the internet was or that there existed people who loved the Handmaidens/ Naboo like I did, so thank you for your blog, and keeping the Royal Handmaiden Society alive! I just wish the website was still around. Sorry if you've discussed this before, but WAS Sabé playing a joke on Padmé when she told her to clean up R2 on the ship? I can't believe there's still things about the saga I'm still discovering after all this time

To answer your question…. In Queen Amidala’s Journal by Jude Watson, Padmé writes: 

“Now that I am Padmé, the Queen can command me to perform tasks. I told Sabé she must do this, or it will look suspicious. But does Sabé get just a little pleasure out of telling me to clean up an astromech droid? Maybe. She’s only human.” [pg 28]

So ultimately, it does serve a purpose, but when you watch Sabé and Rabé’s expression during that exchange, they’re both definitely smirking a bit. *I* always read it as them kind of getting a kick out of the role reversal and teasing Padmé but, to each their own. (NOTE how Eirtaé however, is SERIOUS 10/10 STONE COLD POKER FACE. lmao love that) I always felt like this scene was a big character moment for each of them in a … you know, subtle, quiet, handmaiden kind of way ꒰˘̩̩̩⌣˘̩̩̩๑꒱♡
