MamaCat Goes Exploring
Hello, my darlings, and welcome. Here’s my thing.
After five years in New York as a penniless struggling actor and another five years stuck on the Ren-Fest circuit as a penniless struggling hippie actor, I went into radio broadcasting. For the next fifteen years, I told people I was just between acting gigs. Then some other stuff happened, and now I’m a vastly more successful penniless struggling actor than ever before... definitely need WAY more pennies though.
So these will be the stories of my adventures. Normal people my age are talking about how their retirement funds are growing, and slowing their personal paces down a little bit, or maybe looking forward to moving into that resort-like retirement community they’ve been talking about. I have absolutely no idea what that would feel like. None. Zero. I just took a 4-day trip to New York to get to some auditions, and was only able to afford it by couch-surfing my dear friends, like a 26-year-old hipster. Last year I worked four shows in non-Equity summer stock and was 1200 miles away from husband, hearth, and home for seven months. This summer I’ve got three little films, a musical, a play, and a recurring character on a political satire cable-access show lined up. And some voiceover work. And I shot a commercial Monday.
So, it’s finally happened. I fell back on radio in case the acting thing didn’t work out, and now, I have had to fall back on the acting thing because eventually the radio thing didn’t work out. Your high-school guidance counselor did NOT take this eventuality into account.
Oh, I tried to go to business school. I tried it just three years ago. I pulled a 4.0 GPA & racked up a small fortune in student loan debt and I still can’t get a “normal” job, probably because nobody seems to want someone who looks like their mom’s age to be working in their sleek millennial office. But I go to auditions for that character role, and looking like their mom’s age is a large part of why they love me.
Karma. She’s a bitch. And so am I.
Next time we consider the eternal question, a 12-hour drive in one day? For auditions? With my back??
Meow, darlings. Xoxoxoxo
