Congratulations to HAPPY FINISH, the winner of the NON-TRADITIONAL EXPERIENTIAL category for the Creative Awards at CONNECTIONS NEW YORK 2018. Happy Finish collaborated with renowned artist Yinka Shonibare MBE to produce an immersive VR experience for the Royal Academy’s From Life exhibition. For the exhibit, they wanted to transport viewers directly inside Yinka’s art whilst demonstrating how technology can be used as a new medium for artists. To do this, they combined pioneering ‘style transfer’ techniques based on deep learning neural networks with highly detailed volumetric character and environment modeling to create a meticulously authentic VR experience. The project fuses Yinka’s own work with his influences to create an entirely new art piece, demonstrating that technology is constantly offering artists new platforms to express themselves.
