Today, my girlfriend and I were talking about the merits of Saturday being the only true weekend and I was reminded of a tenant my family used to have in Queens. His name was Shah, we called him Shah-saab as is customary in Hindi. He was a very strange fellow, but I suppose most people renting out single rooms in New York City are. He was very old, had ghost-white hair, cocked eyes, and a characteristic Oshkosh boonie hat(I can't remember if it was red or white). When he spoke to you, you could swear that he was looking right into your soul.
I was always very uncomfortable around the guy. He made me uncomfortable. The tone of voice he had was very commanding. As a child, it was damned frightening. One time I was telling him about the television shows that I watched and I remember telling him that my favorite show(at the time) was on on the weekends, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, at 7PM. He scolded me saying "Fridays are not weekends!"
In the present day, several hours after dropping my girlfriend off at her house, I was looking at some '90s list and it mentioned Oshkosh. I thought of Shah-saab's hat, and I thought of the time Shah-saab had a heart attack on the living room floor. The last time I ever saw the man was when he was being carried into the ambulance.
