The job of the lady-in-waiting was, when compared to most occupations for a woman of this time, an easy one. She was given a good home, good food to eat, plenty of allowance, and above all she was the best friend, servant, and companion of Lady Elizabeth of York; eldest daughter to King Edward IV. Barbara thought very highly of her mistress, they were the best of friends and she would never let anyone hurt her.
This was the case on their travel home from Paris, France one early morning. King Louis XI had promised Elizabeth his son Charles' hand in marriage to unite France and England once more, and this past month she had been in Paris visiting with her intended with Barbara faithfully at her side. On the way home, Bobbi (as she preferred to be called in relaxed company) had suggested that she pose as her mistress in case anyone came bearing the Princess harm.
There the two women sat, Elizabeth laughing at how elegant Bobbi looked wearing her crown and Bobbi waving her off to stop with a smile on her face. She never had any wild thoughts about being Princess herself, it all seemed too much work to her, she was comfortable in life as it was. And someday she knew she would be allowed to marry a well off gentleman bearing a title and she would be well taken care of. And more importantly, her days as a bodyguard would be behind her, she would never have to confess to her husband the rough and inelegant things she did in her youth.
