Heartmates AU

Hello beautiful KH fandom. I am here to humbly offer you my KH AU that I'm writing a fanfic for. In the Heartmates AU, the people inside of Sora’s heart - Ventus, Kairi, Roxas, Xion, and a tiny piece of Vanitas - are awake! They do not slumber the whole time, waiting to be awoken by an outside force. They are able to be fully conscious and project themselves outside of Sora’s heart into the real world. They can see and sense the world, but can’t interact with it, like ghosts. But they can talk to Sora and the few other people who see them.

They are able to be in two other states of consciousness, the “Waking Dream” and the “Deep Sleep.” The Waking Dream is when they are in the Dive to the Heart, the dream state in-between wakefulness and Deep Sleep. Deep Sleep is to be fully asleep and have their own dreams within dreams.

The name for the AU is a portmanteau of heart and roommates. Instead of living in the same room, they live in the same heart!

Plot beats for the first two parts and notes under description (spoilers beware):

Part 1: Prologue

Starts at the end of BBS, when Ven’s heart is taken in by Sora to sleep and heal. Ven goes into deep sleep, but soon wakes up into the Waking Dream, the Dive to the Heart. He is on Sora’s heart station, and sees his own station (which is shattered to pieces but held together by Sora’s light) connected to Sora’s. He finds a piece of Vanitas’ shattered heart in his pocket. Overcome by anger, he is about to break it, but he gets hit by Vanitas’ feelings of despair. Taking pity on him, Ven decides to keep the piece safe.

Ven fully wakes and finds himself next to Sora in the waking world. Sora can see Ven and they talk for a bit, but Ven gets tired and has to sleep again. He wakes again a few months later, talks to Sora, then goes back to Deep Sleep. Because his heart is broken, he can’t stay awake for long, and sleeps for long intervals.

Over time as Ven’s heart heals, he can stay awake for longer and sleep shorter. When awake, he and Sora talk, play, and do all kinds of things together. Ven becomes a fixture in Sora’s life, though no one else can see him. Sora promises that he’ll figure out how to get Ven’s heart back to his body.

When asleep, Ven dreams of his memories, including ones that he forgot. He remembers the events of Union Cross. He also gets some of Vantias’ memories, which gives him a new perspective on his brother, who was abused for years by Xehanort.

It’s upsetting for Ven that no one else can see him (everyone thinks he’s Sora’s imaginary friend) and he can’t interact with the world. Sometimes he feels like he doesn’t even exist.

By the time Sora is 10, everyone in his life is worried or making fun of him still having Ven as an “imaginary friend,” and Ven is feeling so messed up about his memories and living as a pseudo ghost, that he thinks he should stop seeing Sora. Then he remembers something Very Bad that happened in Union Cross, which makes him feel like an awful person. He is so distraught that he decides to deep sleep for as long as possible. At least in his dreams, he can be with his friends again.

Part 2: KH1

Ventus is woken from his long slumber by a strange voice telling him that he is needed. He enters the Waking Dream and is surprised to find Kairi on Sora’s heart station. She is even more surprised and confused, and Ven explains to her that her heart must have entered Sora’s like how Ven’s did, and her body is elsewhere. He helps her move to the waking world.

Ven and Kairi find themselves with Sora in Traverse Town. They talk through what happened on Destiny Islands. They walk through the town and the events of the game start.

Instead of Kairi's heart being missing, it's her body that's missing. Riku is even more jealous than before since Kairi's heart is with Sora, and he's determined to find her body before they do. What they don't know is that Maleficient has Kairi's body and is hiding it.

KH1 events go on with Ven and Kairi tagging along, shenanigans ensue. Cut to the part where they reach the end of Hollow Bastion and find Norted Riku. Kairi's body is there, but it's in a force field that Sora can't cross, so she can't reach it. Sora stabs himself with his Keyblade to unlock his heart and free her and Ven.

Ven stays with Sora, not wanting to lose him. Kairi wakes up in her body, then saves heartless Sora. The rest of KH1 events ensue. End of Part 2.

And that's what I have to share so far! I have a few ideas that I can't decide on yet. Having Ven and Kairi just follow Sora around seems a tad boring, so I'm thinking they could give him buffs on the sidelines, or fuse with him to share his body and give buffs, or even take over his body. I'll probably go with fusion.

Probably a controversial opinion about Isbeth, but…

I sympathize with her. We have an understanding of what heartmates are through Poppy and Cas, seeing exactly the lengths they’d go to in order to protect one another, (aside from that one time Poppy literally stabbed Cas in the heart, but that’s besides the point)

Anyway, it’s hard for me to see the way those two are with one another and then turn around and demonize Isbeth’s actions because honestly… if Poppy hadn’t witnessed a physical manifestation of what could become of her in the same situation, there’s really no reason to assume Poppy wouldn’t do exactly what Isbeth had done, right?

Poppy has always empathized with others, but when it comes to heartmates, we know logic is irrelevant.

The only difference really is that Poppy would actually regret her actions whereas Isbeth obviously did not—but then again, Isbeth didn’t just lose a heartmate, she also lost their son.

By the end of “ACOGB,” I was honestly on the verge of tears as Isbeth told the story of what had happened to her. I couldn’t help but to think of Poppy and Cas. I really don’t think Poppy would let her vengeance carry on as long as Isbeth’s or even attempt the same cruelty—however, Casteel? Yes. I absolutely think he would.

Cas didn’t hold Mr. Tulis’ wife and child accountable for harming Poppy because, obviously, his family had nothing to do with his actions.

But if Poppy had actually been killed?…

I’m not so sure Cas would’ve been as just—I genuinely think he would’ve let his grief topple over and slaughter the entire Tulis family, to be honest.

It doesn’t excuse Isbeth’s behavior at all, but it does humanize her, (at least, for me.)

Curious if anyone else felt that or if I’m going way too hard playing devil’s advocate…
