Each piece is hand-made to order in my home studio, with unique variations and defects as a result of the fabrication and casting process.

I finally got the chance to make my witch’s ladder/rosary! It is beautiful and I’m really proud of it. I opted for the real snake vertebrae, and used black and white stone beads that look like moons. For the coin, I used a strophalos keychain. I didn’t find a metal flower, so I used a ram skull charm instead. I already had an antique key that I got at an oddities fair. I threw in a few extra beads for aesthetics; the red one is just plastic, but I used it to represent the Philosopher’s Stone as a kid, so it felt appropriate.

The iynx was surprisingly easy to make. I found an ideal-sized disc at Michaels, used tracing paper to draw the strophalos on it (the crossroads sigil from the book is on the other side), and drilled two holes in it. Really simple. It’s legit fun to play with! But I think my ritual to ensoul it didn’t really work, so, I’ll probably have to try that again.

I like that this book is giving me excuses to craft things. I don’t do that very often! But I already know it’s gonna get more insane from here on out.

This is my most recent addition in what is quickly becoming a rather large reference library for all things PGM. Amongst my "must reads" for those interested in theurgy or magic practices which center gods and devotion.

The Hekataeon - A Quick Review

Going into Jack Grayle's Hekataeon, I can say I had high expectations for the book. From the poetry shared online, to the snippets and glimpses of the book I could find in other practitioners posts and reviews, I must say that the idea of having it became a slight, very mild obsession for me.

My body was filled with excitement when I was finally able to start reading it, and the material did not disappoint. Jack's poetics really are something else, and I find his perspective not only on Hekate, but also on magic, to be really valuable.

There is a very noticeable influence from the PGM in the way he works the magic of the book, and while I have not yet done any of the rituals or spells contained in the texts, the way he words and manages those things have definitely seeped into my own way of directing power into the world.

An example of that: I have recently strung together a necklace in the form of a coral snake, as directed by Hekate. When imbuing it with magical power, one of the first things I did was to call for Helios to enter and leave the necklace to purify it with his solar, fiery power, a move inspired by the Dagger Rite of the Hekataeon, in which the witch is expected to call forth the Fates, the Furies and Helios into a dagger which will house the infernal spirit Bainkhookh.

The is no Bainkhookh in my necklace, of course, but the Dagger Rite did expand my understanding of magic and what are the limits of this way of working power.

Though I have a lot of good to say about the book, I was actually a bit surprised to find out that Hekate, while directing most of the workings, is only talked about until about halfway through the book. After that, there is a section talking about Selene, Artemis and Persephone, understood as aspects of Hekate, and then another that talks about Helios, Dionysus and Apollo, which are followed by a final section that talks about Kirke, Medea and Pasiphae. Thoses sections, which have many rituals in between them, mostly focused on the powers of the spirits mentioned.

By the end of the book, Grayle speaks much of Dionysus in a way that seems to blend british-derived tradcraft and his understanding of the PGM. He also speaks of Hermes and Hermekate. I'm still not sure how I feel about both of those things, personally.

All in all, I do feel like the book lives up to the hype — though the price of the trade version is definitely more appropriate than the older iterations of the book — and I will definitely keep using the knowledge it contains to my future workings.
