Round 1, Poll 4 - Sten (Dragon Age: Origins) vs Helena Blake (Mass Effect) Who do you most wish you could romance?
Sten
Helena Blake
FAVORITE NPCS | HELENA BLAKE
I have not come so far to be arrested. I would die before going to prison. I would most certainly kill before going to prison.
I really do think Zaeed's mission would have been much interesting if the mission was to kill Vido. Then the choice would have been, are you a good soldier and finish the mission or are you a good soldier and save the innocents. Instead the choice is, are you a good soldier complete the mission to save innocents or do you forsake the mission in indulge a murder revenge fantasy you only learned about five minutes ago.
Imagine a Leverage Mass Effect AU....
The Mastermind: Gianna Parasini
The Grifter: Rolan Quarn
The Thief: Kasumi Goto
The Hacker: Schells
The Hitter: Matriarch Aethyta(?)
There are probably better lineups... I couldn’t think of any Hitter-type con men in the series off the top of my head. Perhaps Conrad or the Patriarch could play a role? Helena Blake? Lorik Qui’in?
So @phoenike is writing the Reyder fixit fic of my dreams and talking with her about it has given me all kinds of lovely headcanons about Reyes.
We know that Reyes came to Andromeda to “become someone”. It’s implied he’s had a pretty shitty life, lived in the Terminus for a while. He obviously has had training, and he has a flair for drama and a massive need to secure himself ressources and a base. Security, in other words.
My new headcanon is that Reyes is from a wealthy crime cartel family. That as a kid he was pampered and probably didn’t know much about what his parents did. He got to grow up fairly free from material cares, but he had massive expectations placed upon his shoulders and also he must have learned early on how to deal with the brutal and dangerous people his parents did business with. Surrounded by alpha personalities he had to become cunning and manipulative as a survival trait. I headcanon his father as a strict, borderline abusive guy who brought his son up as his heir without regards to his emotional wellbeing, but who used all ressources at his disposal to give Reyes good skills. He even managed to pull some connections to get Reyes into the Alliance cadet program where he was trained as a pilot.
Then Helena Blake happened. She was a competitor of Reyes’s family, and she disliked how their success overshadowed hers. So she used the first human spectre, Shepard, to get rid of her competition. His mother and father first fell out of grace, having to move out of their house and loosing all of their money, then subsequently got killed during a gang fight. Reyes was still in the Allicance at that time and would blame himself forever after for not being with his family when they needed him most. After his background went public knowledge, he of course had to leave the Alliance program.
Reyes was taken in by his abuela (this part is purely @phoenike’s headcanon which I adopted but take no credit for), and she managed to give a spoilt and desillusioned teenager on the cusp of adulthood some decent moral values after all. Set him on a straight path, so to speak. Unluckily, he was met with bad luck from there on out and after his abuela died, Reyes fell in with bad people again. The impression his father left on him was too strong, the constant mantra of having to do the family proud too encompassing and so Reyes tried emulating his parents, starting to deal with criminals, which eventually lead to him having to go to the Terminus and later taking the only chance of clearing his records by starting new with the initiative.
I like that this explains how Reyes seems to view every relationship as a series of mutual transactions and seems to have a hard time believing that anyone could like him purely for himself. Also it explains why he is so prone to hiding in the shadows - he’s seen first hand what happens when you stand in the spotlight too much. And why he has such a need to prove himself, if it was drilled into him from a young age that in order to be successfull you need wealth, ressources and followers and that it was his duty to secure those for his family.
For @cactuarkitty‘s NPC appreciation week! It’s Helena Blake, that crime boss turned social worker/crime friend of Aria’s. I’d kinda like a game about her. It’d be like Saints Row in space. Although that was Saints Row 4 already in a way...
