Back in March, I went on a little sketching spree inspired by @billgreening ’s beautiful Barbie designs, it was a major shock to hear about his departure :(

He’s such an icon within the doll world, and a huuuge personal inspiration to me as both an artist and an aspiring toy designer! 😭💕

I finally decided to render and share one of my favorites from that batch: the 2008 Hello Kitty Barbie ✨️

Growing up, my sister had a gorgeous Barbie with the Steffie mold, and I’ve always adored it... even before I knew it's name 😳! This design’s cute pin-up vibe and the Sanrio x Barbie combo made it impossible not to draw! 😩💖💕💖

Do you have a favorite Sanrio character? There's soooo many.... I can never just pick one 💀

I have long been familiar with Hello Kitty as a brand, but I don't really know much in-depth. Is there Hello Kitty lore? I mean, I have to assume there is. Just a quick look at the Wikipedia page tells me Hello Kitty has a whole family and a boyfriend.

Over the years there's been multiple tie-ins with Hello Kitty and Barbie. I assume this is because both lines were originally marketed to children but then developed more of a following with adult collectors. (Once again I am basing this on the Hello Kitty Wikipedia page - please correct me if I am wrong.)

What fascinates me is how DIFFERENT all the Hello Kitty Barbies are from each other!

This 1999 Japan Exclusive is very cutesy and pastel.

Whereas this Pink Label Barbie from 2007 has considerably more edge.

This collectible from 2008 has a more 50s aesthetic, featuring Barbie in bold colours with pedal pushers.

While this 2017 Signature doll uses a similar colour scheme, but a return to a "cuter" aesthetic.

And of course, I can't go without mentioning the 2007 My Melody Barbie - My Melody being Hello Kitty's best friend, or so I have been told.

I really like her. I can't put my finger on why. I just think she's serving.

If anyone has any insight to why there have been so many different Hello Kitty tie-ins, I would love to hear. I genuinely don't understand but would really love to know. I feel like this is something that has slipped me by somehow.
