92sies has been occupying my head a lot recently, but i haven't seen it enough to properly talk about it. what are some fun facts that you like to talk/generally think about?
Oh my god so I pester everyone with this all the time but no one ever realizes that when David pulls out the carriage bolt so Jack can escape from the refuge, that carriage driver would die from the fall and being dragged by horses. It’s inevitable. David Jacobs of all people is the only newsie to kill someone on screen.
Hmm every single film, tv show, etc that the actor who played Specs is in, the actor who played Dutchy is in as well. They’re just as inseparable irl. I’ve decided I’m editing this to add the fact I own all of them because of this. I don’t brag about much I swear but this may be my only chance.
I just caught this one recently, but Boots gives Spot a bag of marbles he describes as “real good shooters,” winning Spot over to to join the strike by treating him as a friend rather than Jack and David’s hoity-toity political negotiation. This is immediately before the Manhattan newsies are getting destroyed by the police and only mostly make it out because Spot and his gang show up to slingshot marbles at the cops. Therefore, Boots is the only reason they’re all alive and deserves more credit for it.
When Jack looks at the pictures on Denton’s fireplace mantle, the biggest one is Denton and Teddy Roosevelt wearing cowboy hats.
Christian Bale negotiated a role in the movie for his dog into his contract so he’d have an excuse to bring her on his weekly flights from Prague to LA for for filming with him. She was supposed to be the Jacobs’ dog lying on the floor at dinner, and was even written into Newsies: A Novel, but was sadly cut from the film because she wasn’t trained at all and wouldn’t listen to the crew. He also negotiated for his sister Louisa to have a role (probably so she could take care of the dog while he’s filming), and she’s the assistant who drags Medda offstage when the Rally is raided.
Man there are so many good facts about this film, thank you for asking!
