Flying has always been the one place where the noise in Hiccup's head settles into something more manageable. Up here, above the sea, there are no expectations waiting for him, no council meetings, no arguments, no impossible decisions. There is only the steady rhythm of Toothless' wings as they cut through the cool night air and the endless ocean rolling beneath them, its black surface catching ribbons of moonlight wherever the waves break.
The wind smells of salt and rain, cold enough to sting his cheeks, while scattered islands drift below like forgotten pieces of the world. Normally, when he has company during flights, he fills it with conversation. He points out distant sea stacks that resemble dragons, tells stories about whichever island they're passing, or laughs whenever Toothless decides to show off with an unnecessary dive.
Tonight, though, he can't find the words. Every thought that rises to the surface ends the same way—with you sitting silently behind him and the crushing certainty that none of this should have happened.
He doesn't have to look at you to know you're still tense. He can feel it in the way your hands rest against him, careful and restrained, no longer clinging to him out of fear but still unwilling to let go completely. You haven't spoken since leaving your village, and somehow your silence says more than anything else could.
Hiccup understands it far better than he'd like to admit. He's spent years swallowing thoughts that felt too complicated to explain, years convincing people he was fine because the alternative seemed impossible. He knows what grief sounds like when it has no words yet.
You left behind your home barely an hour ago. Not just a house, but your people–your family, the forests you grew up walking through, the cliffs you've probably watched every sunrise from since you were a child. Everything familiar had disappeared somewhere behind, swallowed by darkness and distance, and the only person beside you is the one responsible for tearing you away from it all.
The realization swirls in Hiccups chest. Since stumbling into your life, he seems incapable of doing anything except making it worse. He gets captured, nearly executed, exposes a soulmate bond neither of you asks for, and then stands in the middle of your burning village asking you to trust him enough to leave everything behind. It feels impossible when he lays it out like that.
If your positions were reversed, Hiccup isn't sure he would have climbed onto Toothless either. The fact that you did—that despite every reason not to, despite everything you've been taught about him, you chose to take his hand—only makes the guilt settle deeper beneath his ribs.
He lets the silence linger for a while before finally speaking, though the words sound clumsy even to his own ears.
"Are you okay?"
The question is ridiculous, and he knows it the moment the words leave his mouth because of course you're not okay.
For several long moments, the only answer is the whistle of wind rushing around. Toothless glides effortlessly through the night, banking around a bank of low clouds that drift across the sea, and Hiccup almost convinces himself you aren't going to answer at all.
Then, quietly, almost too quietly to hear, you say, "I'm fine."
It's such a transparent lie that it nearly hurts.
Not because he thinks you're trying to deceive him, but because he remembers saying those same words himself after his father died, after battles that left more scars than anyone noticed, after every conversation where admitting the truth felt too exhausting. I'm fine is easy. It asks nothing of anyone. It keeps people from asking questions you're not ready to answer.
Hiccup doesn't call you out on it.
Instead, he watches the horizon where the sea meets the sky, his fingers absently tracing one of the worn leather straps on Toothless' saddle.
"I'm sorry," he says after another stretch of silence, his voice almost disappearing beneath the wind. He doesn't bother explaining what he's apologizing for because there are too many things to count. He's sorry that your soulmate turned out to be someone your people despise. He's sorry your uncle had to watch you disappear into the night. He's sorry Toothless teared apart your town hall, even if he knows his dragon was only trying to save him.
Most of all, he's sorry that meeting him cost you the only home you've ever known.
He doesn't expect a response, and for a while there isn't one. Then, almost imperceptibly, he feels your grip tighten against his side for the briefest moment before relaxing again. It's such a small movement that anyone else would miss it entirely, but Hiccup notices. He doesn't know what it means. Maybe nothing. Maybe it's simply Toothless shifting beneath you. Even so, he finds himself holding onto that tiny gesture far longer than he probably should.
Time passes strangely in the sky. Minutes blur together until the shape of the archipelago begins to change, and familiar cliffs slowly emerge from the darkness ahead.
Berk.
Hiccup recognizes his home long before most people would. Even from miles away, the island has a silhouette all its own, rising sharply from the sea in layers of dark stone and dense pine forests that blanket the mountainsides. Lanterns glow warmly along the docks, scattered like fallen stars against the cliffs, and the Great Hall stands proudly above the rest of the village, its broad timber roof catching the pale light of the moon.
Your entire body goes rigid as the island grows larger, and he hears you draw in a slow, steady breath. When he glances over his shoulder, he immediately understands why. You aren't staring at the village.
You're staring at the dragons.
There are dozens of them visible even from this distance. A pair of Deadly Nadders weave effortlessly through the night sky above the cliffs while a Gronckle snores loudly atop the blacksmith's roof, smoke puffing lazily from its nostrils with every breath. Several Terrible Terrors dart between chimneys, stealing scraps from unattended baskets, and somewhere near the cove a Monstrous Nightmare lands beside a fishing boat as though it's the most ordinary thing in the world.
To Hiccup, it barely registers anymore.
To you...
It must feel like stepping into another universe.
He offers a small, sympathetic smile before turning his attention back to the approaching island.
"When we land, let me do the talking,” he starts, gently.
He feels your gaze settle on the back of his head.
"My people are..." He huffs a quiet laugh. "...curious."
And that’s putting it mildly.
"They worry," he continues. "Especially when I disappear without telling anyone where I'm going. So if they start asking a hundred questions the second we touch the ground—which they will—just let me handle it."
He doesn’t hear a response, isn’t expecting to, but he takes it as agreement and starts the descent to Berk.
Toothless lands neatly in the center of the square, folding his wings against his sides with a pleased rumble. The moment his talons touch the earth, heads begin turning in every direction. It takes only seconds before someone recognizes them, and then the entire square seems to come alive.
"Hiccup!"
"There he is!"
"About time!"
"Where've you been?"
He barely has time to slide from the saddle before the questions begin raining down on him from every angle. Familiar faces push through the growing crowd—fishermen just returning from the docks, blacksmith apprentices still streaked with soot, mothers carrying sleepy children on their hips. Their concern is genuine, if overwhelming, and Hiccup can already tell this is only the beginning. Berk has never been particularly good at minding its own business, especially when one of its own disappears without warning for several days.
Add in the fact that he’s the chief and, well…
He reaches up automatically, offering you his hand as you climb down after him. The moment your boots touch the packed earth, he notices the subtle shift in your posture. You don't cower, and you certainly don't make yourself small. If anything, you stand with the same quiet dignity you've carried since the moment he met you, shoulders squared and chin lifted despite the exhaustion weighing on every feature.
But your eyes never stop moving. They track every dragon that passes, every unfamiliar face lingering a second too long, every sudden burst of laughter from somewhere deeper in the village. You aren't afraid in the obvious sense. You're assessing and watching and waiting to learn whether this place is safe or whether the warmth surrounding you is only temporary.
Without realizing he's doing it, Hiccup shifts half a step sideways until he's standing just in front of you. It isn't dramatic enough for anyone else to notice, but it places him between you and the steadily growing crowd almost instinctively. He doesn't consciously decide to do it. His body simply moves before his mind catches up, creating a small barrier between you and the dozens of curious eyes now fixed in your direction.
A familiar weight bumps heavily against his shoulder.
Hiccup glances down to find Toothless staring at him with unmistakable amusement, his wide green eyes narrowing ever so slightly before the dragon lets out a smug little chirrup.
"Oh, don't," Hiccup mutters under his breath.
Toothless responds by nudging him even harder, nearly knocking him off balance entirely.
"I am not fussing."
The Night Fury blinks.
"I'm not."
Another chirp.
Hiccup sighs, giving in as he reaches up to scratch beneath Toothless' jaw where he knows the dragon likes it best. Toothless immediately melts into the touch with an exaggerated rumble that vibrates through his entire chest, his tail giving a satisfied flick behind him.
"Traitor," Hiccup mumbles.
Toothless only looks more pleased with himself.
"So..." one of the older fishermen says at last, nodding politely toward you. "Who's the lass?"
The square seems to grow noticeably quieter, and he doesn't have to look to know you've become painfully aware that every conversation has stopped in favor of waiting for his answer.
His mind works quickly.
"I found her a few islands east of here," he says, keeping his voice even. "Small settlement got hit by raiders a couple of days ago."
It's close enough to the truth to come naturally.
"Toothless and I happened across it while we were flying patrol." He pats the Night Fury's neck. "We managed to fight them off before things got any worse."
Toothless lifts his head proudly at the praise.
"Right, bud?"
The dragon lets out an enthusiastic trill, nodding once as though confirming every word of Hiccup's story before puffing his chest out with obvious satisfaction.
Several villagers murmur sympathetically.
"Raiders, huh?"
"Poor thing."
"Didn't know they'd gotten that close."
"Is everyone else alright?" someone asks.
Hiccup hesitates only briefly.
"As far as I know."
No one presses further, though he can practically see more questions forming behind their eyes. Before anyone has the chance to ask where you're from or how long you'll be staying, another voice cuts cleanly through the crowd.
"Hiccup Haddock!"
He knows that voice before he even sees her.
Astrid shoulders her way through the villagers with very little regard for whoever happens to be standing in her path. She looks equal parts relieved and irritated, her braid slightly windswept from what must have been a very hurried search through the village. The moment she reaches him, she plants both hands firmly against his chest and shoves him hard enough to make him stumble back a step.
"You complete idiot."
Despite everything that's happened, despite the exhaustion pressing down on him from every direction, Hiccup can't help the tired smile that pulls at the corner of his mouth. "I've missed you too."
"Oh, don't," Astrid shoots back immediately, though the edge in her voice is dulled by obvious relief. "You disappear for days without telling anyone where you're going. Do you know how worried everyone's been? Fishlegs was convinced you'd crashed somewhere. Snotlout wanted to organize a search party, which honestly would've made things worse, and I…" She exhales sharply, shaking her head. "I thought you'd flown into one of those storms north of Breakneck Point."
For just a moment, Hiccup's smile fades—she sounded so much like his father. The thought arrives so naturally that it catches him off guard, bringing with it that familiar ache that still surfaces when he least expects it. Astrid notices the shift in his expression almost immediately. She always does.
Whatever she had been about to say dies on her tongue, and she reaches up instead, catching hold of the front of his tunic before tugging him down just enough to close the distance between them. The kiss is brief, warm despite the evening chill, and so familiar that Hiccup responds without thinking. Years of shared victories, arguments, fears, and quiet moments have made gestures like this second nature between them. He melts into it instinctively, letting himself enjoy the simple relief of knowing she's here and safe, if only for a heartbeat.
Then the memory of who is standing only a few feet away crashes back into him.
The warmth drains from him quickly, and he breaks away a fraction too fast, his stomach dropping before he even turns around.
You're exactly where he left you. You haven't interrupted, haven't looked away, haven't even shifted your weight.
You simply stand there, looking between him and Astrid, expression slipping.
He’d paid attention to you during your ride to Berk, and he learned little things without meaning to. The way you hold yourself when you're uncomfortable, refusing to make yourself smaller even when every instinct tells you to disappear. The way your eyes move first, carefully taking in every person and every exit before the rest of your expression catches up. The way your face remains composed while your hands betray every emotion you're trying to hide.
Your gaze lingers on Astrid for only a moment before drifting back to him, and he watches something inside you carefully fold in on itself. It isn’t resentment he sees in your expression; it’s something smaller, quieter, sadder—it's the look of someone realizing a truth they'd desperately hoped wouldn't hurt as much as it does.
The sight makes something inside him sink, because he knows exactly what you're seeing.
Astrid is no longer an idea built from the stories he told you back in your village. She isn't simply the girl he'd admitted he loved despite everything the soulmate bond insists should be impossible. She's standing right here in front of you now, close enough to brush shoulders with him, looking at him with the effortless familiarity that only comes from years spent growing up together. Every movement between them is unconscious. The shove. The teasing. The kiss. None of it requires thought because it has become woven into the fabric of who they are.
Hiccup remembers the conversation you'd had only yesterday, when he'd stumbled awkwardly through explaining that the bond between souls hadn't changed his heart. At the time, you'd listened in silence, your face carefully unreadable, and he'd almost convinced himself that hearing it had somehow been easier than living it would be.
Gods. He hadn't even thought…
Astrid, meanwhile, follows his line of sight and finally notices you standing just behind him. Her expression changes immediately, any lingering irritation melting into the same easy warmth she offers almost everyone she meets.
"Oh."
She steps around him with a welcoming smile, extending a hand before Hiccup has a chance to say anything.
"So you're the poor soul who got stuck travelling with him."
Hiccup groans quietly. "Astrid..."
"What?" she asks, looking entirely unapologetic. "Someone should've warned her."
A few villagers nearby laugh.
Astrid ignores them as she keeps her attention on you. "I'm Astrid. Welcome to Berk." She gestures vaguely toward the crowd still pretending not to eavesdrop. "I promise we're friendlier than we look. Most of us, anyway."
"We're very friendly," someone protests from somewhere behind them.
Astrid raises an eyebrow without turning around.
"You interrogated her before she'd even climbed off the dragon."
"We were being welcoming!"
"You have a very strange definition of welcoming."
The square erupts into another round of laughter, and after only the slightest hesitation, you accept Astrid's hand and quietly tell her your name.
"It's nice to meet you," Astrid says, her smile never wavering. "Don't worry. You eventually get used to them asking questions about absolutely everything. Around here, privacy is considered suspicious behaviour."
Before you can give any sort of response, Gobber comes stomping through the dispersing crowd, his wooden leg thumping heavily against the ground.
"Alright, that's enough standing around," the older man announces, waving his hook dismissively at the lingering villagers. "Can't you lot see the lass is exhausted?"
He stops beside Hiccup, giving you a quick once-over before nodding to himself. "I'll get her settled somewhere warm."
Hiccup looks up. "You sure?"
Gobber snorts. "Lad, I managed to keep you alive for twenty years. I think I can handle finding someone a bed."
The older man jerks his head toward the village. "You've got half of Berk wanting explanations. Best stay here before they start making up their own."
Unfortunately...
He has a point.
But you don't move when Gobber starts walking.
Instead, you look at Hiccup. There's hesitation written plainly across your face now. Understandable hesitation. You've known him for barely two days, and now he's asking you to disappear into an unfamiliar village with an older man you've never met while he stays behind.
Hiccup meets your eyes and gives you a single, reassuring nod. It's nothing elaborate, just a quiet promise: Trust me.
You study him for another long moment before finally returning the smallest nod of your own.
Then, without a word, you turn and fall into step beside Gobber as he leads you deeper into the village, disappearing gradually into the warm glow of Berk's lantern-lit streets while Hiccup watches until you vanish from sight altogether.
The square gradually returns to life around him. Conversations pick back up, dragons weave between villagers' legs, someone nearby laughs at a joke he doesn't quite hear.
He barely notices any of it. His mind keeps replaying the look on your face.
"Hiccup?"
Astrid's voice pulls him back.
He blinks, realizing he's still staring down the street where you'd disappeared.
"Hey." She nudges his arm gently. "You alright?"
He tears his eyes away from the empty street, forcing himself to look at her instead.
"Yeah, I..."
The word catches unexpectedly. He doesn't know what to say to her, doesn't know how to even begin letting Astrid in on who you are to him, on what feelings you've unlocked inside him.
"...Yeah." He manages a small smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes. "I'm good."
Astrid watches him for another moment, and Hiccup can see she's unconvinced, but doesn't press. Instead, she bumps his shoulder lightly. "C'mon, let's get you cleaned up and fed."
Hiccup nods, glancing back at the path one more time, before following behind Astrid.

Summary: You get injuried on a mission and when you come back you try to hide it from Hiccup but that doesn't work. When you wake up, He is right there by your side with something on his mind.
You limp over to your dragon, wincing and gritting your teeth as pain floods through your whole body. "Ah fuck" You cursed out as you slowly hop onto your dragon and give them a pat indicating to take flight. Your dragon takes flight and you try to take steady breaths while trying to stay conscious. Once you make it back home, you spot Hiccup standing there which made your heart skip a beat.
Just act natural y/n...act natural
You hop off your dragon and look at Hiccup but your vision kept going in and out. Hiccup notices you swaying on the spot and he immediately wraps his arms around your waist to try and steady you. "Hey are you ok?" He asks you but before you could answer, your vision blurs and goes dark as you pass out in his arms. Your head lolls on his shoulder and Hiccup wastes no time, lifting you up in his arms and running towards the med bay.
Hiccup bursts through the med bay doors and all of the nurses turned their heads as they all see you in his arms limp and unconscious. "Help Please!" Hiccup shouts with concern in his voice and a couple of nurses rush over to him as one of them quickly takes you before bringing you to a bed. "What happen Hiccup?" The head nurse asks him as they start assessing you, checking for broken bones or wounds.
"I-I don't know I was waiting for her and when she came back from the mission s-she seemed off and before she could say anything she passed out in my arms" Hiccup explains as he runs his hands through his hair as he feels his heart race. "Okay Okay we'll figure it out Hiccup" One of the other nurses tell him as they place their hand on his shoulder. He watches as they lift up your shirt to reveal a good size wound which makes his head run with a hundred thoughts.
Are you going to be okay?
How did this happen?
How bad is it? Is it life threatening?
Hiccup runs his hands through his hair as he makes his way towards the entrance of the med bay, needing some fresh air urgently. Once he walked through the doors he leaned his back up against the wall and closed his eyes, trying to focus on his breathing as he could feel his heart beating through his chest. You didn't know this but Hiccup had strong feelings for you and just seeing you injuried like that and you passing out in his arms made him realized something...
That he loved you deeply
After what seemed like hours, the doctor comes outside looking for Hiccup and he practically leaps off the wall and walks towards the doctor. "Hiccup there you are" The doctor says as he gives Hiccup a gentle smile. "Hey doctor, what's the news?" Hiccup asks as he watches the doctor's face for a reaction or change in his demeanor. The doctor smiles as he places his hand on Hiccup's shoulder, patting it a couple of times. "Y/n is gonna be just fine. The wound has been cleaned and bandaged up. You came here in time Hiccup, good job" The doctor explains, giving one last pat on Hiccup's shoulder before heading inside.
"Wait! Can I see her?" Hiccup asks as he sees the doctor turn around and nod his head, giving Hiccup the go ahead to see you. Without hesitation, Hiccup speed walks back inside and starts looking for you and once he spots you he heads over to your bedside and gently grabs your hand. He presses your hand to his cheek and closes his eyes, taking a deep breath of relief before opening his eyes back up as he just looks at you. His eyes wander from your hair, to your closed eyes, to your soft lips and then down to your chest, watching it slowly rise up and down.
A few hours passed by but Hiccup stayed right there, waiting for you to wake up and just admiring how peaceful you look and how beautiful you are. Slowly, your eyes flutter open and you turn your head to see Hiccup sitting there, your hand in his hands with his eyes closed. You let out a soft grunt sound as you try to adjust yourself which wakes him up and you watch his eyes widen in surprise before leaning up and giving you a kiss on your forehead.
"Hey there" He says sitting back down and you smile before feeling the butterflies in your stomach take flight. "H-Hey there yourself" You say as you let out a small chuckle but wince from the pain. "Easy there y/n, don't want to hurt yourself more" Hiccup said and you rolled your eyes playfully before looking at him. "You stayed" You whispered and he nods his head, keeping his eyes on you. "Of course I stayed" He says as he gives you a gentle smile which made your heart skip a beat.
"Why?" You ask him and he tilts his head before looking down at the ground, almost as if he was trying to find the right words. "I stayed because...I realized something today" He starts off, looking back at you with a whole new look in his eyes. "I realized that I love you Y/n. I've loved you for some time now and I didn't know how to say it. Seeing you today, injuried and hurt made me realize just how much I love you Y/n" Hiccup confesses and you couldn't help but feel your heart explode from excitement and love that you been keeping bottled up.
You feel the smile creep onto your lips as your cheeks flush a slight tint of pink. "I love you too Hiccup. I have loved you for some time now too but didn't want to say anything in case you didn't feel the same way" You confess which makes him smile widely as he leans up and places his hand on your face, stroking your cheek softly as he leans down slightly. "Can I kiss you?" He asks you softly and you bite your lip before nodding your head.
Hiccup crashes his lips into yours and the moment you two kiss, Fireworks explode and for a moment the whole world disappears. For the few moments, its just you two and no one else.
He pulls away from the kiss first, smiling so much that it made you giggle. "What? What's so funny hm?" He questions and you place your hands on his cheeks as you too start to smile so much. "You're smiling like an idiot" You say teasingly and he rolls his eyes as he sits down on the side of the bed, grabbing your hands from his face and placing them in his. "Will you be my girlfriend Y/n?" He asks and you nod your head instantly as you try to sit up, wincing in the process.
"Just as long as you'll be my boyfriend" You said and Hiccup nods his head without hesitation.

"Why does it matter where I came from?" Your voice stern and dismissive.
"Well, because you might be dangerous. Who knows when you'll decide to stab us in the back when we're mid-fight." Snotlout spat back.
The Dragon Riders were currently interrogating the rogue dragon rider, you.
Listen, when Heather had said she 'knew a girl' that could help them with better strategy when it came to defending the Edge, Hiccup had expected someone nice.
He expected someone with an open and friendly mind; kind and cooperative, not someone who was as cold and unfriendly as an untamed dragon.
"I thought you accepted Heather's help because you needed someone to aid you with skills in strategy, not because you needed someone to tell you their life story." You rolled your eyes, your slight disdain the only thing emanating from you.
"Just because we're in need of help doesn't mean we'll just blindly accept anyone throwing their help." Astrid walked a step closer, as if to shield the others using her own self, her arms cross and unfriendly, the girl's first impression towards you the same as her body language.
"Huh, is that so? I thought you would. Going in situations blind as a bat seemed like your guys' thing," You looked into the direction of the sky where Heather had flown off after dropping you off here, saying a quick apology.
From your years of knowing Heather even when you were both rogue Vikings, you've heard her tone of apology multiple times, with you chalking it up to Dagur doing something immensely messed up again.
"—Especially since you went in blind when you thought Viggo's troops would be on some random island unguarded, ready for you guys, unarmed and unprepared on a silver platter." You said, looking at everyone's hostile faces, then to what you had presumed to be the leader, Hiccup.
He looked to be as angry as everyone else, yes, but his eyes were full of unbridled rage more than the others. It stung, having the memory recalled from your mouth.
He prided himself on being incredibly intuitive when it came to being strategically methodical, so when you put even more emphasis on it being incredibly blindsided, his blood felt like it would actually start bubbling from the immense anger.
And much to their distaste, their enraged mood had just made you smirk, elated with yourself that you had elicited such strong emotions from them with just a few words.
"Listen, do you need my help or not? Well, I know you mugs need it,"
Hiccup didn't even understand what that insult meant, but he still felt the sourness of that jab thrown at him.
"—But are you going to accept it, or leave yourselves with your tails tucked between your legs?"
oof. . . hope the title and visuals dont give too much away lols ;)
might post this in like 2 weeks. . . still trying to get back in the groove of writing, stay tuned babes ~ !
Warnings: nothing but fluff and cuteness for this one :)
Summary: You and Hiccup are having a lazy day and you don't want to wake up for the day.
The feeling of soft kisses being gently pressed on all over your face causes you to slowly open your eyes. "Morning beautiful" Hiccup softly says and you tilt your head up to look at him as you give him a smile. "Good morning" You say groggily as you wrap your arm around his chest, drawing random shapes along his skin with your finger. "How'd you sleep?" He asks you and you nodded your head as you look up at him once more, looking into his beautiful green eyes.
"I slept good, I could just lay in bed all day" You tell him to which he chuckles as he pulls you closer, kissing the top of your head. "You know that is gonna be hard to do baby" He tells you and you grumble at him before mumbling something under your breath while you maneuver yourself to where you were now laying on Hiccup. "Come on sweetie we gotta get up" Hiccup says as he attempts to move you to the side of him but you go dead weight to where it becomes a challenge to do so.
God you were stubborn as hell at times
You couldn't help the smile creeping on your face as you feel him 'try' to move you a few more times before he just lets out a sigh of defeat and just wraps his arms around you. "You're lucky I love you" He murmurs as he kisses the top of your head once more. You guys lay there, enjoying one another's company for a couple of hours when suddenly there was loud knocking coming from the front door.
"Hiccup! Where are you?" Astrid's voice shouts from outside to which you roll your eyes and huff slightly as you lift up your head. "Go away Astrid! Let us be" You shout from the bedroom as you lay your head back down onto Hiccup's chest. "What was that babygirl?" Hiccup asks as he tries to sound stern but couldn't help the few chuckles escape his lips. "I want to snuggle and just be here all day" You tell him and he smiles as he rubs your arm lovingly.
"That wasn't very nice of you though sweetie" Hiccup says and you smile before nuzzling your face into the crook of his neck. "Yeah yeah" You grumble as you give him little kisses along his neck.
A/N: Hello all! Thank you so much for waiting for this chapter. I know it's been almost a year of waiting, and I deeply apologize for that. My first year teaching has been filled with trials and errors, laughter and fun. I've come home days crying because of stress, and I've come home with joyful stories. This year has been a lot, and I thank you all for waiting until I've finally gained the mental strength to write this chapter. I actually got choked up writing this one, so I hope you all enjoy. Until next time, dear friends <3
Previous Chapter .~.~. Next Chapter
Your hands move in motions that slowly become familiar and tedious, crushing herbs the way Gothi had shown you just a few moments ago.
The elder had requested your assistance in her hut, especially since the dragon riders had been sent on a mission to find more islands around them, leaving you behind on Stoick’s orders.
Stoick still perceived you as something that could lead to the downfall of the village, seeing as you’ve become accustomed to the island and its many scents.
His thoughts no longer bothered you as they had once before. Your focus more on Hiccup and the other dragon riders.
How they had begun to accept you as one of their own.
Your own pack.
A feeling you hadn’t experienced since you were younger.
A new herb was handed to you by Gothi as you traded with the previous bowl of herbs you had been preparing for her pastes.
Its smell invaded your senses.
Its color contrasted against the dark wooden bowl it had been placed in.
Lavender.
Your mother's favorite.
She always smelled of lavender, hanging bundles throughout the house for their calming effect.
Your wings slowly droop as you stare down at the purple herb, fingers gently trailing over the soft petals, Gothi none the wiser to your woes as a scene begins to fill your mind.
A scene you wished you could so desperately forget.
—
A younger you runs around the house, wings spread and giggles filling the air as your father gives chase.
A familiar game between the two of you.
Your mother stands near the fireplace, tying twine around a fresh bundle of lavender that she has just carefully picked from the garden right outside.
As she reached up to tie the end of the twine around the small hook, her eyes glanced over towards her husband and daughter just as he wrapped his arms around the squirming young girl.
Happy squeals and giggles escape you. Your father and mother join in with their own sounds of amusement as they watch you begin to settle in your father’s arms.
Your mother, having just finished hanging the last bundle, soon joins the two of you. Her hand came up to gently rest against the back of your head while her lips pressed against your temple in a familiar motion.
You lean into her touch, your father soon joining by pressing his lips against your other temple.
You were loved, you were safe.
You were happy.
The booming sound of a loud horn soon invades the tranquil moment, your mother and father’s gaze snapping over towards the door with eyes quickly widening.
That sound had never been heard before in their calm village, too hidden for anyone to find, the thick bushes making it too much of a struggle to even venture through.
But that sound meant danger.
It meant an invasion.
Your mother rushes to a chest near the fireplace, one you were never allowed to touch. As your father sets you down, you watch as your mother hands him a shield and a sword while she equips herself with a bow and slings a quiver full of arrows across her back.
Confusion flows through your small body, calling out to them as your father rushes towards the door, your mother going to follow after, before stopping to kneel in front of you.
“My darling.” She begins, her voice filled with something you have never heard from her before. A feeling you would remember later on in your memories.
Pure dread.
“Do not follow us. Stay here and stay hidden. We will come to find you when it is safe.”
She pressed one last kiss against your forehead, lingering just a few moments before she pulled away and stood to rush after your father, slamming the door behind her. But it doesn’t fully shut.
Your mind, just 5 years old, takes in the orders from your mother, but your body trails towards the barely open door.
Screaming fills your ears as you slowly peek through the crack, the once warm glow of the fire pit in the middle of the village now a blazing sun as it begins to spread across the grass from home to home.
Dragons were attacking the villagers, something you had never seen before.
And in the center, a shadow against the growing flames, stands a cloaked figure.
Your eyes take him in, the dark cloak protecting him from the fire, the dragons avoiding him to go after the villagers.
Young and old were not safe; those who fought and those who ran. The dragons didn’t distinguish between them. They just attacked.
You watch as the villagers go after the figure, their weapons raised high and wings spread to give them momentum in the attack.
Right as their weapons clash against each other, something invades your vision.
The figures of your parents, both wounded from their short time in battle, were running towards the home as dragons followed after them, soon noticing your figure peaking out from behind the door.
As they get closer, their voices get louder and louder.
“Run!”
“Go out the back!”
Your body stumbles back from the door as they soon shove themselves inside, their bodies instantly pressing against the door to keep the heavy figures of the dragons from following.
Their eyes stare at your small form with terror, your wide eyes staring up at them with your own form of fear.
Your mother had cuts along her body, blood soaking into her clothes and dying them an ugly, deep red. Your father didn’t fare much better, also having cuts along his body, but his left wing had deep slashes from claw marks, leaving it limp behind him.
Your father speaks first between grunts as the dragons push harder.
“Go! Go out the back!”
Your mother soon follows.
“Run as far as you can, don’t stop! We’ll find you!”
Your small feet stumble back towards the door they were referring to, hands gripping onto the front of your dress.
“Mama… Papa…”
Sensing your fear, your mother gives you a reassuring smile, her body jolting as they try to keep the door in place.
“Don’t be scared, my darling. We’ll find you.”
“Be fast, my little spitfire. Just like our game.”
Your father reassures you as well, his eyes softening as he stares down at you.
With that, you turn and run as fast as your little legs could carry you out the back door and into the forest. Jumping over bushes and ducking under twigs, the sounds of screaming get softer and softer until the forest grows eerily silent.
You wait until all you can hear are the soft sounds of birds chirping, moving your body under the nearest bush, hiding with your knees pressed against your chest.
It wasn’t until the sun had set and rose again that you slowly ventured back to the village, following your sense of smell.
And as you stand in the center of your burned village, the silence is a contrast to the previous screams that had haunted you, your small nose burning at the heavy scent of ash and charred wood.
—
The scent of charred wood and ash rips you from the memory.
Your eyes were watery, your throat burning and your chest squeezed. But you couldn’t linger on the thought.
Burning. Something was burning.
You look over towards Gothi, who seems to notice it as well, as her brows furrow and her hand reaches for her staff.
When you look out the small window in front of you, your eyes widen when you notice a group of wild dragons wreaking havoc on the villagers and their homes.
Fire was spat, teeth gnashed, weapons slashed and cut.
Flashes of your memory intermingle as you watch the villagers of Berk begin to protect their homes with weapons and their tamed dragons.
Your body moves before you can think, before Gothi can even react as the bowl of lavender slips from your hands and clatters against the floor.
You can’t hide, not this time.
As you slam the door open, your wings spread before you jump off the cliff where Gothi’s hut resides, flying towards the village center.
When you fly over groups of wild and tamed dragons, you take in their growls and snarls, trying to figure out the reasoning for their attack.
You can’t catch much.
Food, home, danger.
You insert your own growls as you continue to fly over groups, pleading with them to stop the attack.
A group of rumbling roars interrupts, your gaze snapping over to find a group of wild dragons closing in on Stoick and Gobber, both of them gripping their weapons tightly.
They were experienced Vikings. In the back of your mind, you knew both of them could hold their own.
But your memory flashes of the people in your once bustling village, how even the strongest had fallen to whatever had caused the attack.
As two of the dragons, a gronkle and a hideous zipplback, prepare to fire at the two of them, your wings flap harshly as you turn in their direction.
You can hear Stoick and Gobber yelling at them, provoking their attack as they prepare their weapons.
You flap your wings harder, hands out as you push the two right as blasts go off from the dragons, your momentum helping with shoving the two large Vikings out of the way.
Heat engulfs your back, but the scales on your wings and the scales that trail around the skin where the wings connect help protect your skin from being burned as badly as it would’ve been.
Taking no time, you turn to face the dragons, a snarl rumbling from deep within your chest. The gronkle responds with its own growl and small roar, the other dragons following after.
That’s when it clicks.
The dragons were attacking because the Vikings were trailing too close to their clearing, where they hunted for food and kept their homes.
You glance over towards the two Vikings, Gobber looking at you with widened eyes while Stoick just… stares.
“You are getting too close to where they nest and hunt.”
You tell Stoick mostly, your eyes staring into his own as he and Gobber begin to stand.
“They are angry that you keep moving on their grounds and are getting too close to their young.”
Gobber mutters his shock about you being able to understand the dragons while Stoick’s gaze moves over to the group of wild dragons.
More growls and roars leave them as you move to look over at them as well.
“They just wanted you to stop.”
Stoick’s grip tightens on his axe so much that you can hear the slight creaking of the wood, but as he looks over towards you, giving the smallest of nods.
At his agreement, you turn towards the group, giving your own chorus of growls and roars, chest rumbling as you try to form the sounds you had learned all those years ago.
The dragons grumble, bowing their heads slightly at you before releasing thundering roars. Slowly, the group of wild dragons begins to make their way back into the forest, a new truce lightening up the air against the smell of smoke.
Your gaze remains on the group of dragons until the last one disappears behind the brush, your shoulders untensing and your wings relaxing.
A sudden hand landing heavily against your shoulder causes your body to jump and your gaze to snap up towards whoever had done so, heart racing at the sudden jolt of fear.
Shockingly, Stoick stares down at you, his gaze still that deep look that you had grown accustomed to over your time at Berk, but it was something… lighter.
He nods, patting your shoulder once again before turning and heading towards the group of Vikings that were beginning to fix up the damage caused by the wild dragons.
Gobber soon hobbles to stand beside you, his own hand landing against your shoulder with relieved pats and simple words before following after Stoick.
“Good job, lass.”
You stare after him, your chest light at the praise, and as you watch the dragon riders begin to make their way to land on the island, you feel like you were finally changing things.
