5 things you didn’t know about... a heat-resistant capacitor

1. The capacitor is used to store an electric charge and can withstand temperatures of up to 300°C.
2. It has been developed by a team of researchers led by Dorothee Dietz, at the Fraunhofer Institute for Microelectronic Circuits and Systems IMS, Germany.
3. Capacitors have an insulating layer – the dielectric – separating two conducting metal plates, which act as the electrodes. Dietz’s team has imprinted tiny holes into the surface of the capacitor’s conducting layers, allowing them to use a thicker dielectric, which can withstand higher temperatures.
4. Instead of using the traditional silicon oxide for the insulating dielectric, the team used a mix of tantalum pentoxide, a compound of tantalum and oxygen and aluminium oxide. These materials store charge carriers more efficiently than silicon oxide.
5. The capacitor can be used in drill bits, engine injection systems and aircraft turbines, as well as other applications requiring heat-resistant components.
