I don't care what you believe, it's a fact that if you are an immigrant, a woman, black, trans, gay, or any religion other than Christian, Trumps reelection directly affects YOU and YOUR rights. it's not debatable, stay yourself, be loud. If we hide they win.

Black community leaders call for "state of emergency" in Grand Rapids

Some community leaders in Grand Rapids are calling for a state of emergency declaration over the conditions facing young black and Hispanic men in the city.

Last month, a study commissioned by the city showed police stopped both black and Hispanic drivers at higher rates than whites in Grand Rapids. There was a dramatic incident in which police held five unarmed black boys at gunpoint. Parents of the boys demanded an apology. Police refused to give one.

Tensions are high.

But Pastor Jerry Bishop says the problem facing young men of color in the city isn't just about police or even crime. He says young black and Hispanic men in Grand Rapids just don't have the opportunities they need to succeed.

"We're not talking about just violence," Bishop says. "I think that there's a misnomer about this. Our state of emergency is that we have a segment of our population that is just not prospering and thriving."

Census data show the unemployment rate for African-Americans in Grand Rapids was three times as high as it was for whites in 2015. Hispanic residents had double the unemployment rate of whites.

Women's march

You know this time that we are in is so so important. People of all minorities are feeling threatened and are compelled to speak out and we are speaking out and banning together which is so amazing because we used to just fight for what effected us. There were times in history where women oppressed gays and gays oppressed African Americans/latinxs ect. But recently, people of different genders, race, sexual orientations, and religions are starting to fight for eachother. We are all experiencing similar pain and then only way to fight it is together ie: the women’s march. That march was for more than just women, it was for all of the “us”. The people who feel alienated. And honestly it’s effected me so much because I identify with being a women, Latina, and a lesbian and I’ve never known a way to fight for just one part of myself. And the world is realizing this and it’s great. The women’s march was one of the only places in my life where I was proud to be all of the things I am all at once and it was so emotional. That’s what it’s all about, making everybody feel safe and comfortable in this country regardless of their identities but also making those identities known. that’s just something that fuels me so much. I hope that everybody finds that level of acceptance in their life and I’m so fortunate that I’m able to take part in things like civil rights rally’s and not have to risk my life. We’ve come so far but there is SO much left to do. We can’t stop now.
