Miscanthus sinensis ‘Graziella’ (maiden grass), the Japanese grass of autumn illuminates the path to the Japanese Garden at Chicago Botanic Garden where there are some amazingly trained Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine). The North American Japanese Garden Association (NAJGA) conference continues at the gardens to be full of fascinating information and insights.
The Miscanthus sinensis ‘Graziella’ is a German selection having an upright graceful habit with silvery-white plumes appearing in late summer and held well above the leaves. The foliage develops good orange tones and will become parchment coloured for the winter. The plant will be trimmed to the ground in late winter or early spring and clumps can be divided in spring before new growth appears.
