Immortality is a Nope for me
Is it just me or is immortality overrated?
It strikes me as depressing, honestly. I already have a mildly unhealthy attachment to the people I care for, if I was immortal and had to watch them waste away (age and dye naturally) over time I'd be so... sad.
What do I do then? See a psychologist?
"Oh yes thank you for agreeing to see me. Let's get right into it shall we? You see I'm immortal and for the last, however long it's been, I've been watching everyone I've ever loved and cared about slowly age and dye at what would be considered a normal rate for everyone else but is painfully too fast for me. Since I am immortal their existence in my life is but a blip, a mere fraction of what I will experience, but since my time with them is so quick, so short yet impactful, I haven't been able to mourn each of them quite right. At this point, I don't know if I've mourned them at all.
I spend my days reminiscing on what was and constantly thinking about what will never be. The experiences they aren't by my side for. I constantly see and hear things, trinkets and such, old and new, that I know they'd love but I can't tell them, can't show them, can't reach for them, can't hold them, can't exist beside them, can't find enrichment in their presence. Just can't, can't can't, cause they're not there.
The worst part is that memento's mean nothing now. It's been so long that the physical pictures I have of them have faded beyond recognition, anything digital is in a format that is no longer supported by any modern technology and trying to find old tech that works is like search for a needle in a haystack that's been thrown through a wood chipper. Any other item I've kept as a keepsake has either been misplaced, stolen, worn-down beyond repair, or is in a museum- sealed behind protective measures that don't allow me the closeness I once had.
Lost to me in a way I didn't expect, lost in nearly a worse way than my loved one is lost to me. It's still there, physically, but bared from my being. Bared from my touch, kept away by alarms, glass, plastic, even physical guards.
Only to be viewed, never to be treasured the way I once had, back when I had them. Them. When they were still alive and by my side. Now their items sit in their cases, somehow foreign despite their familiarity.
Nearly there like they used to be, yet not there like I need them to be. There in it's presence but lost to me still the same.
And don't even get me started on doppelgangers and decedents.
So, shrink, what advise do you have for me?" - like what?
Would you want to be immortal?
Fuck yeah!
Absolutely not!
Why would I care about a hypothetical?

Have I just thought about this too much? Should I stop thinking about this? I can't stop thinking about this and it's really bumming me out 🙁.
How do I stop thinking about this?
