New Light Fury redesign dropped again after I wasn't happy with my older ones, oops.

Yeah, so as you guys know for my HTTYD 3 rewrite, I re-imagined the ENTIRE species. And just calling them "[some term/adjective] Fury" would be boring, so in my AU they are called the Arctic Shroud. On the left is Subzero- my reimagined version of the Light Fury character who becomes Toothless' mate, on the right is just some random Arctic Shrouds as babies.

More facts about the species under the cut:

Arctic Shrouds are an Arctic species of Fury. They are a separate species of Fury from the Night Fury (eg. the way a polar bear is a different bear species from a brown bear). Other members of the Fury family include the Sand Wraith (from the HTTYD games), and my other fan species the Tide Fury.

In my universe, the term "Light Fury" does not apply to the Arctic Shroud. Light Fury is a term used for albino or leucistic Night Furies specifically. Sometimes they're also called Day Furies.

The Arctic Shroud is primarily based on leopard seals, beluga, and even polar bears (for ones that look REALLY thick and chonky). Fitting in with their Arctic camouflage, they are typically white in color with a few tints of blue, though some can also be grey and have spotted markings

The smooth skin, fewer ears, and smaller feet are things I kept from the original Light Fury design. The smooth skin with blubber keeps them warm. The fewer ears and smaller feet are to prevent body heat from being lost (eg. why an Arctic fox's ears are so much smaller than a fennec fox's- fennec fox ears have big blood vessels to help them keep cool, an Arctic fox's small ears serve the opposite function). However I didn't make the feet so obnoxiously petite like the canon LF. While they are slightly smaller and less stumpy than that of the Night Fury, they compensate with more visible digits and sharper claws for hunting/fighting

I've also kept the cloaking part of their camouflage. Their breath is similar to that of Drago's Bewilderbeast where they breathe out cold mist that freezes anything on contact. They use their ice breath to clock themselves with an icy sheen that turns VERY reflective and near invisible. It's effective during hunting and confusing opponents during fights.

While not as aquatic as my Tide Fury species, they are decent swimmers. They can dive and glide underwater to catch prey, as well as ambush their prey by stalking them under the ice.

The Arctic Shroud actually function like penguins do, with the females hunting for food while the males guard the eggs until they hatch. Even though I'm obviously not keeping HTTYD3's bullshit that Furies apparently can't survive in the cold, while Toothless CAN stand the cold it's not an ideal environment for him to survive in. Since MY version of the Hidden World is a giant inactive volcano with multiple different biomes in it (and not an underwater prison), Toothless and his mate live on the edge of the Arctic biome in the Hidden World, so each of them can be in their ideal climate at once.

I also changed ALL the fins to be jagged and curved, not annoyingly smooth and heart-shaped like the canon LF (ugh)

I was watching Casual Geographic's video on leopard seals, and the story of Paul Nicklen and his encounter with a non-hostile leopard sale and gave me some ideas for headcanons regarding my HTTYD OC Subzero (tl dr; my re-imagined Light Fury in my HTTYD 3 rewrite), since my Arctic Shroud species is also inspired by leopard seals.

Unlike in the film where the Light Fury doesn't get to know or bond with Hiccup because of the movie's stupid in-universe reasons she has to see all humans as the devil, Subzero gradually does warm up to Hiccup (a few of the other Berkians too, but mostly Hiccup), but in a similar snarky manner to Toothless' early relationship with him in the first movie.

More specifically, in a scene that parallels Toothless constantly regurgitating fish for Hiccup, Subzero would actively hunt for penguins and present them to Hiccup as a gift. She genuinely feels sorry for this twig of a human who's Toothless' best friend and actually thinks she needs to help feed Hiccup dead penguins for him to grow up stronger. It takes a lot of time and communication with Toothless for Subzero to realize she doesn't have to keep dropping penguin corpses at Hiccup's bedside every night.

Apparently leopard seals can sing and it's one way they attract mates, so singing is one way male Arctic Shrouds court females. Unfortunately because Night Furies don't sing, this is one of the reasons Toothless is unable to win Subzero over at first. But that also doesn't matter, because Subzero warms up to Toothless' dangerous yet fun-loving nature, just showing how strong the love between these two different Fury species is.

This one isn't inspired by leopard seals but just a cute idea for my OC I've always had. Remember the baby dragons who harassed Toothless in the first film? Well in ANOTHER callback, a new generation of them also start to bother Subzero as well. Well instead of her being motherly towards them like some marketing and even some sexist fans insist Toothless' girlfriend has to be, Subzero has an even easier way of dealing with these annoying hatchlings. She uses her ice breath to freeze them on the spot and walks off, like this video.
