Ambient artist NAKAYA’s new single ‘Ballet Shoes’ is chilling contemporary folk-inspired, blending blissful and barely there electronics with her powerful voice that holds and impressive range, switching between stronger notes and softer chilling echoes. ‘Ballet Shoes’ is a cinematic single that really shakes your core.
Cartwheel - Life Doesn’t Wait
Fitting with a lot of stripped back lo-fi indie that’s coming from the States, ‘Life Doesn’t Wait’ entwines elements melancholy with stripped back but upbeat rock. Soft vocals from Kristyn are poetic - think Mitksi and Snail Mail sad-girl indie. The nostalgia of 90s alt-rock drips in too, giving a mature feel.
Witching Waves - Eye 2 Eye
Witching Waves are a punk trio from the UK, and ‘Eye 2 Eye’ is a feel-good, attitude driven post-punk gem. The verses and choruses mesh together perfectly, driven by chugging riffs and relaxed, spoken style vocals. It’s fantastically formulaic but infectious.
Major Moment - Living Your Life Like This
Boston trio Major Moment electrify with ‘Living Your Life Like This’, in the leagues of rock giants. Consisting of two Russian-born vocalists and an American drummer, you can tell that there is a cultural diversity within the band, as it feels very Euro-rock. This isn’t a bad thing, as it offers an unusual element not often found within American rock bands. For an underground band, this behemoth is impressive.
Cocteau Twins dream pop flutters through on Hush Pup’s ‘The Hours’. The Canadian duo’s new single is a softly sweet, near five-minute dreamy journey, where the vocals are floating so high you think they might enter another dimension.
