@thychesters asking if I'm talking about shakarian smut while on a road trip as if I'm not always thinking about it in some capacity
What would you say Ford's main character trait is, in your opinion-- 'Ford's sixth finger' 🎤 take it away
WARNING-- LOUD FORD RAMBLING BELOW (nobody gaf, but I'll answer anyway... Anon...)
Anon... thank you for this because I have such an opinion on it.
If you take a character like Ford, you're probably going to get at least (100) different answers depending on whose askbox you drop this Q in. I remember back in the day when Stanford was basically viewed as either an iredeemable villain or just the lesser version of his brother. So honestly, I've found it really fascinating watching people start digging deeper into his character, especially after The book of Bill (ooo gay triangle) But regardless of how other people view him, here's how I'd define Ford:
If I had to pick one trait that sits at the center of everything, I'd say it's insecurity.
Yes, yes, before everyone hits me with a water gun…I can already hear the objections. “But he's prideful!" || “What about his ego?" || “He's selfish!"
Yeah. I agree with all of those. Those traits DEFINITELY fit the nerd. But I think at the end of the day, underneath all of that, he's just a very deeply insecure person. Most of the traits people attach to him are things that have grown out of that insecurity in the first place. Stanford is a character who's incredibly relatable while also being very easy to dislike because of how self centered he can be. BUT, BUT BUT BUT… I'm not saying he doesn't love his family….he absolutely does, but his work comes first. His research comes first. It always has.
He's gotten better over the years, obviously, but I think the driving force behind his entire story is that feeling of never being enough. He wants to be bigger than he is. He wants to be remembered. He wants to be the best in his field. He wants to leave some huge undeniable mark on the world. And yea, a lot of that comes from his childhood. Filbrick left scars on the twins emotionally. The difference is that we get to spend most of the show seeing how those scars affect Stan. Ford never really got that same amount of time to make his case. By the time we really meet him in canon, he's already become this morally ambiguous guy whose ego has been feeding off a lifetime of feeling different from everyone around him. + (hilariously, given my username, I should mention the sixth finger.) —> Because yes, obviously that contributed to his insecurities too. Feeling physically different absolutely mattered. I'm not ignoring that at all. I just tend to focus more on the mental side of it when I talk about him.
TLDR, I don't want to write an entire dissertation and give the same answer I've given a million times before, so I'll keep it simple:
I think Ford Pines is one of the most insecure self-serving characters I've ever gotten attached to. And that's exactly why I love him. Because he's actively trying to become a better person. But fails, a LOT. A. LOT. Most of his problems are the result of his own choices, which is part of what makes him interesting in the first place. He doesn't need me to defend him. He's a sixty-god knows-year-old fictional man. He'll survive. But at the end of the day, if I had to boil Stanford Pines down to one defining trait, I'd still say insecurity. (With love & sheer hate, as I type this on my iPad..)
yall i fw some shit so hard i just dont talk about it you dont even know they be on my mind
In the process of making another Alchemist MC and it got me thinking about the mage that raised the Alchemist MC. I believe the pronouns were she/her (unless it takes/uses the pronouns you pick for your MC?)
But like what did she do to be an expelled mage??? From what I remember of the demo, you have to be fairly rich to get into the institution in the first place. So I'd assume, if you're high ranking enough, you'd have a pretty luxurious life. So why do something so bad to leave that behind?
Was Alchemist MC born in Eridia and already in the hands of the Senobium, and this mage just stole MC for her own tests and fled the city?
Or did she already do something that got her exiled and just so happened to find this cursed child?
Honestly with the existence of the cider and the pursuit of immortality and the fact that a lot of people come to the Neath just because of the tales of weird supernatural shenanigans you can get up to, I'm officially making a character whose entire purpose is to work up the ridiculous amount of money necessary to become immortal and turn herself into a literal, living library. The politics of the time and the horrors commited by humanity on a world-wide scale, the cultures lost and the people loved but left to be forgotten if they are not preserved.
What if someone decided to devote their lives and possibly all of eternity to gaining as much human knowledge as possible and fighting against erasure.
