What would you say should be the first steps for someone who wants to write for the Doctor Who expanded universe/Faction Paradox?

1. Read and listen to Doctor Who expanded universe stories!

A surprising number of people skip this step and only read reviews or the Tardis Wiki. I do not recommend this. Reading the wiki prepares you for making conversation and canonwelding (albeit only poorly); it does not prepare you for writing stories.

No need to overthink it, though! Obviously reading every single VNA/EDA/FP novel isn’t a prerequisite for writing a short story; a representative sample of the good ones might suffice as a bare minimum. But the more, the merrier.

2. Read non-Who-related stories as well.

Another step that people try to skip. When writing a good Faction Paradox story, for instance, the “good story” part is harder and more important than the “Faction Paradox story” part. You’ll learn more from reading a good non-DW book than a bad DW one (although both have their value). Many of the brightest moments of the series’ history have been when writers incorporated ideas from good stories outside the series!

There are a ton of “how to write” books out there if you want tips on prose, dialogue, plotting, etc. Some of them are even good.

3. Practice with fanfiction, and share it in a place people can see it.

Tumblr is decent (ping me and I’ll reblog you). The Doctor Who Discord server is particularly great, both for getting feedback and for keeping track of writing opportunities: both fan and charity anthologies, as well as official spinoffs. Just by networking in the #books-n-comics and #canon-welding channels, many regulars there have gone on to contribute to Cwej or Cyberon or PROBE or Auteur, or even to shape the secret future of Faction Paradox. Bonus points if you edit the wiki so you can get into the secret #wiki channel, which is especially high-powered!

The name flamingo comes from the Portugese/Spanish word for flame: flamengo.

They’re born a drab grey, but gradually turn pinks and oranges due to their diet. Flamingos eat blue-green algae and brine shrimp, both of which contain a chemical called canthaxanthin; the brighter the feathers, the more desirable the mate.
