I finally finished TADC and it was Very Good! Made me cry several times. I do think that The Big Thing was handled extremely poorly. I personally found it very compelling but I went in with knowledge revealed outside of the work itself. But not only can you watch it and walk away not realizing the Big Thing, there's actually very little content in the work itself to suggest the Big Thing. If you know it's there, it makes sense and resonates with my own experiences with my transition, but it's also kind of barely there.
It's definitely not as bad as a "and Dumbledore was gay" situation, but it does echo that kind of narrative fumble from where I'm sitting.
With all of that being said, watching it with that knowledge, it was a pretty fantastic piece of art that actually, finally, got me to give the slightest shit about this character. She's obviously there if somebody tells you to look for her, and yes, she is in fact lovely.
I wanna watch httyd 2 again but damn that was heavy
