❛ why did you come back here? to la? you could've gone anywhere, so why here? ❜
cain’s age has always been in his eyes — a heavy exhaustion, something almost pleading. rest. for too many days to count it’s all he’s wanted, all he’s been able to think about. always at the back of his mind. a whisper. a reminder. constant. that age is still there; time still dances around him without a care but since his return there’s something more — something like resentment. it finds a home, now — finds it in lucifer morningstar as he steps closer, as his head cocks just slightly to the side. familiar. but distant. the cain that the devil knew and cared for is out of reach. hundreds of years apart have allowed for the immortal to build up new walls, to guard what’s left of his heart. oh. there are memories but they play somewhere behind the exhaustion — hands together. quiet mornings. sunshine gleaming off of a golden band. distant. they exist now like outdated technology, a fitting analogy where the vhs is stretched — where the audio and video no longer sync up. another life. another person. cain has created countless people to play over the time he’s been stuck on earth and marcus pierce is no different. in time, it won’t matter. in time, all of the attachments to that name will be gone. dust in the bottom of the hour glass. all of them. all but one. and isn’t that new? isn’t that just a bitch? “this is it, isn’t it?” too calm and too close. lucifer’s words are true --- and cain’s are cold.
“this is the part in your hopeful little mind where i tell you that i came back for you. because of our history. because lucifer morningstar is so special, so quintessential. you never learn, after all this time.” but there’s almost something like betrayal --- like a fondness. a thorn in his side. the devil isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and neither is he. that much has been made clear. there’s a moment, fleeting. quick to miss, how eyes flicker to lips as they have so many times in the past --- one of his almost smiles. barely there and gone again. just like he intends to be, as whole. “i’m not here for you, lucifer. run that thought out of your heart. i’m not staying.”
