Heart of a Father

(This is my introduction to the au Heart of a Father which has the tag Fathery Heart on tumblr. This chapter takes place before canon twst but is in that time so Sam is the same age as he is in the game)

Ashton Vargas had been visiting a family friend when he visited the forests of Dreamy Hollow. Harlynn Crane was Vargas’s sworn sister. The two had been raised by Harlynn’s grandparents when they were younger both their parents not around much and in all honesty they had preferred it that way.

Both their parents never enjoyed Vargas and Harlynn spending time together. They claimed the two caused too much trouble and that they stressed Harlynn’s grandparents out. Both children had known but the elderly couple put an end to their parents complaining when they found out why Vargas and Harlynn spent more time at their grandparents house then their own.

The old geezers were gone but Harlynn and Vargas still met up at their old cabin home they had in the forests. They had both agreed to buy the cabin as an area where they could vacation to. Oftentimes they told the other when they would be visiting the cabin so they could meet up and converse or just to let the other know they would be visiting in case they went to the cabin at a later time.

Christmas time was always a time they would spend at the cabin together. They would set up a Christmas Tree and celebrate Christmas together by watching cheesy Christmas movies where they would place bets on who the other's favorite character would be and open presents they had gotten for each other.

At the moment Harlynn was laying out across the couch her legs dangling over its end while her long straight brown hair was draped over the other end because of the couch’s short width. The couch belonged to Harlynn’s grandparents and was in good condition so the two hadn’t cared to get rid of it.

Besides, Harlynn knew she was on the rather lanky and awkward side, being taller than Vargas herself. She had no shame in that though easily able to make sure no one ever bothered her brother or those she cared for. At the moment Vargas had gone to bake a cake and cook deer burgers while Harlynn followed the current movie with her dark brown eyes seemed to follow the characters as they walked across the screen.

“I bet that by the end of this I’ll like the female lead better than that male lead.” Vargas let out a satisfied hum. “I bet you’ll like the female background character by the end.” Harlynn laughed at the competition Vargas said. “I’ll take you on that then.” Silence returned between the two both enjoying the silence between the two of them. The movie was almost over by time there was a knock on the door. Harlynn paused the movie and Vargas held his hand up to stop her from going near the door.

Slowly he crept forward to the doors peephole. He couldn’t see anyone but the knock returned while he still remained at the door. Carefully opening the door Vargas looked around confused before looking down. Two children were at his feet.

One was a boy around the age of nine with dreadlocks, dark brown skin, purple eyes, who was bundled in purple clothing while the other was a baby he held in his arms. The baby on the other hand was pale skin and white hair that faded to black was bundled in several blankets and seemed perfectly well sleeping happily in the arms of the boy who held him. “Sorry to bother you mister. But I need your help.”

Since Vargas had let the two children in he learned the elder boy’s name was Sam and the small baby he had carried with him was his younger brother Skully. It turned out that at some point an orphanage was built near the home of Harlynn’s grandparents and Sam had taken his baby brother and journeyed away from its safety. “I’m tryn to look for someone who’ll adopt me and my baby brother. I don’t wanna to be separated from him.”

The story Sam had told had been heartfelt. Many families had refused to adopt the two together and it had gotten to the point where the orphanage they lived in were going to try and adopt the two out separately from each other. “I’m sorry about your circumstance kiddo but you understand what you did was dangerous for you and your brother right?”

Sam gave a saddened nod. “I do but Skully’s important to me. I don’t want him to be taken away.” Vargas looked down at the baby he currently had in his arms. He was still asleep, not having stirred for even a second. “If you want I can wake him up. Skully doesn’ cry unless he’s hungry. I have his food in my backpack if he starts crying though. I know how to make it.”

Vargas contemplated it for a moment. “I want to say yes but you boys need to be headed back to the orphanage.” Sam looked at Vargas disheartened. “Not yet please? They're sending Skully somewhere else today. I don’t want him to go yet.” Vargas couldn’t help but agree. If it was the last time they would be together Vargas didn’t want to seem like a jerk for separating them.

“Ok you both can stay for a bit longer. I’m going to call though.” Skully was handed back to Sam and Vargas left the two going to the kitchen. Harlynn had gotten a phone book a few days prior so it wasn’t too hard to find the number he was looking for. The call didn’t go as he had expected though.

He had hoped they would have some decency and feel sorry for Sam and Skully at least a small bit. Instead they acted like it was some kind of bothersome job. “If you wish you can bring them back to us tomorrow. There will be a snow storm rolling in soon. I also apologize if the boys are bothering you. Sam can be a bit out of it at times. He claims to see ‘people from the other side’ and has scared the staff quite a bit.” Vargas raised a brow.

“It could be possible he’s telling the truth. Magic does exist.” The woman on the phone let out an exhausted sigh. “Just because magic exists doesn’t mean someone can see them. You must be one of those jockey oaf people right? The ones who believe in everything?” Vargas let out a shaky laugh. “Possibly but that doesn’t matter to me. What matters is I’m surprised your work wouldn’t come out even if it is a snow storm to get the children yourself. It doesn’t sound like you even cared to look for them.”

The woman didn’t respond for a few seconds. “I mean it is a snow storm. They’d be fine probably. The two of them seem sick themselves and there wouldn’t be much of a complaint if they disappeared.” Vargas about broke the phone he was holding. “I have a proposition for you then. If no one comes to adopt the boys together in three days I’ll adopt them myself. But give it three days.”

Vargas was making an impulsive deal but he had been planning to adopt. Maybe not as soon as right then but those boys seemed good unlike the woman had said. Besides he was a troubled child just like Sam was a the woman had said. He felt like they deserved a good life together. “Three days is a deal.”

Three days later Vargas found himself at the adoption center picking both Sam and Skully up. Three days later Vargas saw how happy the two boys were and couldn't help but feel emotional and cry a little. Three days later Vargas was starting a family like he had been planning for the past years and three days later he was thrilled to see where life would lead after three days later.

(I know it's not Christmas but I really wanted to post this. {Mainly because I wanted to be the first person to connect Sam and Skully somehow but like imagine if in canon Skully is like Sam's great related something}. But also because I love the au. Also yes I know about Skully this Skully can be a reincarnation, also Harlynn Crane is my Icabod Crane oc and I love her. It makes me hope one day we get a Sleepy Hollow twst Halloween story because Disney does have a Sleepy Hollow animated short.)
