8 great reasons to visit Antarctica
The appeal of Antarctica is easy to see. If you’re looking for the adventure trip of a lifetime here are eight great reasons for choosing the Antarctic.
Scenery: A vast, jaw-dropping landscape offers both beauty and eye-catching wonders. Stunning seascapes, frozen beaches, almost black-and-white contrasts and awesome glaciers. Seeing is believing in this fabulous setting.
Wildlife: One word sums it up, Outstanding. There are numerous opportunities to get very close to creatures such as seals, whales and dolphins. But perhaps the biggest stars are the penguins, which number in the tens of thousands in Antarctica.
For the adventure: If you’re into adventure travel, there’s plenty to do including kayaking, hiking and trekking, mountaineering and scuba diving. Many people come for the history and science, too.
Once in a lifetime experience: Realistically, the Antarctic is not for everyone. It’s not cheap, with a trip for a fortnight costing somewhere around £5,000 and this doesn’t include the airfare to Ushuaia, Argentina, but memories of the adventure will last a lifetime.
Sure-footedness: Great ice gripping footwear products make exploration on snow and ice such an easy thing to do.
Visit places you've heard about: The Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia, the Falkland Islands, the Weddell Sea, the Ross Sea region and East Antarctica, as well as many of the other sub-Antarctic islands, such as Snares Islands and Macquarie Island.
For the extremes: Antarctica is the highest, driest, windiest, emptiest, coldest place on earth.
For ice and glaciers: An ice sheet covers all but 2.4 per cent of Antarctica’s 14 million square kilometres.

5 runnable Munros
Have you heard about the Munros? Scotland has 282 Scottish mountains with a summit of more than 3000ft – and these are called the Munros. Many people walk and run the Munros – and some go on to complete a “round”. A “round” is all 282 Munros.
The Munros are spread across Scotland and while some are easy to get to, others are very remote. Walking the Munros is a very diverse experience, because some require steep hikes and scrambles while others are a quick run from the car.
Here we suggest five great Munros to run. You’ll need to be fairly fit to run a Munro but there are good paths on these Munros and in fair weather they should not be to challenging.
Make sure you take essentials in a rucksack, such as warm layers, a waterproof jacket and a map and compass. You never know when Scotland’s fickle weather might change and you don’t want to be caught out in shorts, t-shirt and off-road running shoes half way up a 3,000ft or more mountain. Food and drink is also a good idea.
To find out more about the Munros see our blog: Scotland’s Munros: Where to start
5 runnable Munros
These Munros have good, easy-to-see paths to the top. Many can be run if you are fit and have the right off-road running shoes.
The Cairnwell and Carn Aosda, south of Braemar, eastern Highlands
Schiehallion, Perthshire
Mount Keen, near Edzell, Angus (the most easterly Munro)
Mayar, Angus
Ben Lomond, on the banks of Loch Lomond, southern Highlands.
