“Unique just means alone.”
“Well, that’s certainly one way of looking at it,” Yoruichi mused.
“Not exactly the cheeriest way, but I can’t deny there’s some truth to it. But I do think it sells things a little short. Take this right now, for example. How often do an ex-Taichō and an ex-Espada get together to just talk like regular women? That’s pretty unique, and maybe we’re the only ones doing it at the moment, but we’re not alone, are we?” They were certainly there with one another—that much was indisputable.
She returned her focus to Nelliel. “And yeah, maybe this is a unique thing, but it doesn’t have to be. You were quoting that bit of literature earlier—Kant, right? We could make a book club if we really wanted to. Or anything, really. Maybe invite Ikumi. I think that American, Jackie, is still hanging around nearby too. They probably often feel alone as well. Uniqueness might predispose us to loneliness, but it’s not determinative. I think if anything it makes us appreciate good company all the more by giving us perspective.”
She shrugged a little and reclined a bit in her chair. “I don’t know if that persuades you.”
