Yana Leone grew up on a steady diet of old jazz records, courtesy of her father, and ballet performance, courtesy of her mother. Her earliest birthday wish was a spot at Simidanco Dance Company. Her request for Father Christmas was "a beautiful voice like mommy."
It seems she received both wishes. Enrolling in the Simidanco Young Adult Program while still in High School, Yana Leone quickly made a name for herself as a polite but reserved star pupil, with a strict daily routine or academia, dancing, singing and sleeping. It was this incredible work ethic that set her apart from a great deal of her peers, and her demeanor that gave her the moniker among teachers as, "The Old Soul."
But having an old soul means no one's worried about you as much as they should. Soon, the things that surprised them became the things they expected. Anything less than perfection threw her family, her friends and her teachers off. The one time she lost her temper over a broken ballet shoe made everyone so uncomfortable that they just gave her a wide berth for three days and came back like nothing happened.
She realized in that moment that everything she was made her easy to ignore. If she ever wanted to be seen, she'd have to make them see.
Now, as a young adult with a few backup dancing and singing gigs under her belt, Yana Leone is ready to be seen. She has given up her own childhood, her very emotions, her need to be comforted, for this moment. If she makes it into this group, if they last longer than a year, maybe, just maybe, she'll have a group of friends who understand her the way no one else could. And maybe then she'll be seen.
"I'm gonna be seen on the screen."
