ILOVEYOU: Part I

On May 4, 2000, Email users all over the world started receiving emails with the subject line "I love you". The message contains the text "kindly check the attached LOVELETTER from me" and an attached file called LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.VBS.

Opening the attachment activated the Visual Basic script which then replicated itself and was transferred to all addresses within a user's email address book. The virus also deleted random graphic files in the jpg or jpeg format, and altered mp3 music files to make them inaccessible. None of the available anti-virus software was able to detect it.

The virus spreading in a corporate environment caused mail servers to seize up as each user mailed every other user, who, in turn, passed it on again. Many businesses simply pulled the plug on the network and called in teams to scan and repair infected machines.

In the days followed by main attack, the virus had continued to circulate in new and particularly dangerous variants calculated to cause the maximum damage. These new messages involved other subjects, one being "Mother's Day Order Confirmation", telling the recipient that $326.92 is being charged to his credit card for a "diamond special" and urging him to review the attached invoice, which contained the virus.

The cost of the virus has been estimated to be as much as $10 billion worldwide, a figure reached by accounting for lost working time, cost of overtime for IT staff and damage to data systems.

After security experts scrutinised the code of the virus, the location of the author of the virus was narrowed down to Philippines.

The Philippines National Bureau of Investigations (NBI), accompanied by officers of the US Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), were able to track down 27-year-old Reomal Ramones and his girlfriend, Irene de Guzman, who were accused to be the creators of the virus, and were arrested.

It is not certain that Ramones or de Guzman were involved in the attacks. Security experts say that even if the attacks were traced to a computer in the house, this could also have been the work of hackers who used the computer to launch the attacks without the knowledge of the owners. Ramones and de Guzman were released with all charges dropped by state prosecutors, because there was no law against malware in Philippines at the time.

To address this legislative deficiency, the Philippine Congress enacted Republic Act No. 8792, otherwise known as the E-Commerce Law, in July 2000, just two months after the worm outbreak. The ILOVEYOU virus obtained a world record for being the most severe computer virus at the time.
