incjghafas replied to your post “so ive been wondering why koreans in korea get defensive when someone...”
share pls
it’s probably bc they perceive it as a........ Enlightened Westerner swoops in to teach a lesson kind of paternalistic attitude?? and i can kind of understand why that would be the knee jerk reaction bc we have been (and still are) affected by that kind of colonial bullshit, starting from our history of forced integration into the western world and eurocentric globalization etc etc the Usual sldkfjsdlf
so one possible reason why koreans in korea get immediately Defensive can be not because they don’t believe there’s anti-black racism (dear god I HOPE sdlkfjsdf), but because of the fact that (korean-)americans aka “””Westerners””” are the ones trying to start the discussion??? so like... not bc of the content of the discourse, but the unilateral, asymmetrical DIRECTION of it ― from the Western World to here
like... i don’t think it would be an appropriately nuanced approach to just import the kind of discourse originated from a western context and try to apply it here without taking into account the history of colonization/internationalization and how, during that process, korea came to conceptualize race and ppl of other races. so instead of assuming previously-colonized asian countries will exhibit anti-blackness in the exact same way as western countries, it would be our job to examine how that operates in a distinctly korean context
