An unexpected visit
That night there was music; there was laughter; there was happiness; there was wine and the Christmas spirit.
Before dinner, the whole family had gone out to help prepare the Christmas Eve’s supper for the homeless, the misfortuned and the drunk.
After dinner, as their children went off to their bedrooms, promptly followed by the family’s elders, they both felt the urge to take a look outside. They stood hugging at the window, contemplating the snow covered hills, recalling the moment they agreed upon taking everyone to a house up in the mountains for the holidays. It had been their dream of a full house that had brought them the idea in the first place. And how it all had worked out so well, even though the initial scepticism of, well, pretty much everybody. But they’d done it. Once again, all were reminded that, for those two, impossible was just another word in the dictionary.
Suddenly, a light grasping noise could be heard. Trying to pinpoint its origin, they scoured the living room, where they were, the kitchen, the hall and again, the living room. It was then that they noticed the flames in the fireplace dimmingi, which was strange given that there was a lot of wood still left to burn. Could the chimney have clogged up? Bute why? It had been working fine!
The flames finally went extinct and they were ever more curious. Strangely, no fear shadowed their mind or shook their bodies.
As he and she approached the fireplace to investigate, something fell from the chimney causing an enormous cloud of ash. In the mist their though was the same: “why didn’t we clean up the ashes yesterday like it was supposed to?”. It happened frequently that they share thoughts, as most lovers do or people that know each other for a very long time but, to them, it had been happening since they first met, which was strange but neither of them had ever tried to explain or dissect, It was just “their thing”.
- Motherfuckin’, sorry ass, wrinkly old fart! Makin’ a brother do this job, his job nonetheless, in this freezin’ cold holiday night, when what I should be doin’ is bein’ at home with the misses! Sick my ass. I bet he’s sittin’ by the fire, all warm and cozy and fluffy slippers on, bein’ pampered by those washed up green minions, the elves. Ha, the elves. Were they bigger and they could have some real use. A horde of them and them motherfuckers take a whole year slackin’ around ‘til the week before before the deadline and then, guess what happens? Crazy ol’ cracker “Santa Klaus” just bails them sorry asses out. And to add upp to the already fucked up situation, the old fart goes and injures himself! Of course, now who’s left to get the distribution done? In the cold, I might add! The brothers! For sure it couldn’t be those slackin’ midgets. “Uuuhh, they’re so small, so fragile. You wouldn’t want them to be put in peril, would you?”. Damn that old fart, why can’t I just say no to that guy? I must have been an awful reindeer in another life. It’s gotta be karma. Gotta be!
They were stunned. Who was that? The ash cloud was slowly dissipating and they could now see a bright red light glowing in the middle of the room. It was from that direction that the voice they were hearing came.
Now they could also see what looked like an antenna. Thins were getting stranger by the second. Who could it be?
