I had a sneaking suspicion that I was going to love this novel, especially when I heard reviewers that I respect raving about it but I wasn’t prepared for HOW much I fell in love with it. This is the sort of book I gave a little hug and a squeal of joy after finishing and has a rightful space on my favourites shelf to be enjoyed again in the future. This is the story of an unconventional family - the indomitable Betty Ramdin, her introverted son Solo and their lodger, Mr Chetan. The trio are muddling through, enjoying each others company and sage advice until one evening, a family secret is revealed which changes all their lives for the foreseeable future. I became enamoured almost immediately with these fascinating characters. The awkward moments in the beginning when everyone is working each other out are truly cringe-worthy but I promise, it’s all worth it for the development of relationships that follow (hoping to sound suitably vague here! 😂). I loved how the relationships between the characters started, continued, grew and changed as all three main characters find out what it’s like when their comfortable routine is challenged. It’s a story about family relationships, difficult family dynamics but also the family we create for ourselves. It covers trust, forgiveness, hope and patience and created such an interesting group of individuals that I struggle to believe they don’t actually exist! Love After Love won the best first novel award in the Costa Awards 2020 and deservedly so. I can’t wait to see what Ingrid Persaud writes next!
