though no need truly exists for a fire in new orleans in late september, one burns anyways and it reminds zosia of her childhood. of her father’s study and how warm and safe it felt, of her grandfather’s own and how empty and absent it made her feel. she’ll blame it on the champagne for making her a bit weepy, for leaving her with the urge to take the train back to new york city for the comforts of home for the first time since she arrived in new orleans. the sound of approaching footsteps snaps her out of it.
sniffling, she gently dabs beneath her eyes to ensure her makeup hasn’t smudged before she turns and smiles brightly upon seeing minnie. “minnie dearest! i’m so glad to see you.” she closes the distance between them and sweeps her into a hug. “aren’t you proud of me? sat in here all by my lonesome instead of gambling in the other room with those silly boys?”
