Watercolor (Ion Minulescu)

So yesterday I had an interesting poem to discuss for school... Acuarelă written by Romanian author, Ion Minulescu. The title would be translated to Watercolor. This poem was written in 1930 and it’s part of the Symbolistic “literature wave” that swept through Europe at that moment.

This poem goes like this in the last sequence: În oraşu-n care plouă de trei ori pe săptămână Un bătrân şi o bătrână - Două jucării stricate - Merg ţinându-se de mână...

Which translates to: In the city where the rainfall visits ev'ry other day, An old man and an old woman - Worn and wasted showroom dummies - Hand in hand galumph away...

This poem, especially this last sequence, means a lot to me as my grandmother

 - a woman who loved everything art, from paintings, to collages, poems, books - left behind for me an old trunk of hers (that she had brought with her from Ukraine when she got deported) a collection of all the art pieces that she had created. Amongst these pieces, she had multiple drawings of herself and her husband - my grandfather which I have never met - who died back in 1994. On all the pieces that included him, she had written this sequence.

My grandmother had this recurring dream that she was in a train station and she was waiting for her husband and every time the train came, she remembered she had forgotten something at home and she could never get on board and leave with him, but he always told her that he will come round next time and that he was waiting for her.

Even though this year it will have been already three years without my grandmother, I can still feel her energy emanating from this poem. I can sense all the love she had for her husband every time I read these lyrics and I can sense all the pain she felt every time she woke up from her recurring dream, to another day without him. I think that the title would apply to my grandmother’s life, too - a watercolor that gets washed away little by little during the course of years under the influence of the human memory.

A truly beautiful poem and a truly beautiful meaning behind it.
