Espresso Three Ways for the Coffee Purist
While looking back at the last few recipes shared on the blog, I realized that they’re rather intricate, decadent and likely alcoholic and/or topped with whipped cream. But, hey, it was the holidays – there’s nothing wrong with indulging in a rich, festive coffee drink. Now that we’ve eased back into our daily routines and are (hopefully!) maintaining those New Year’s Resolutions, I wanted to share a recipe that is a little more understated. In fact, with no more than two ingredients, these are hardly considered recipes, they’re more of a method of preparation. Yes, I’m talking about espresso.
I consider myself a purist when it comes to coffee, and sipping a simple espresso is my personal favorite way to consume coffee. But then again, I am Italian!
Espresso is ingrained in the Italian way of life, and can be prepared in many ways depending on your preference, but is typically served in a simplified manner that allows the complex flavors and aromas to command attention. And real purists know…sugar and milk have no place here.
Here are my three recommended methods of preparing espresso:
- Espresso Ristretto – A short shot of espresso made with the normal amount of ground coffee and about half the amount of water, equating to 1 ounce of coffee to less than one ounce of water. It has a strong character and a single goal: to satisfy the purists.
- Espresso Lungo – This method is slightly ‘drawn-out,’ with an once of hot water added to the espresso. It is meant to be enjoyed slowly as the flavors unfold within the cup.
- Espresso Corretto – The traditional Espresso ‘corrects’ itself when a splash of spirits are added. You and your coffee will feel warmer and full of energy after indulging in this elevated espresso. I recommend 1 ounce of espresso per ½ ounce of spirits – Grappa and Sambuca are most common but there are plenty of spirits to experiment with. However, I’d suggest passing on gin, which does not mix well with coffee.
Craving a cup yet? Whether you’re enjoying on the go, slow or savoring your favorite spirit, each of these methods can be made with illy’s iperEspresso systems and its compatible pods. The preparation methods are simple, yet effective for achieving high quality and taste.
It’s the Italian way! And to that I say, Salut!
