I am neither brat nor demure, I am Desire by Fontaines D.C
Ireland in the 1960s and 1970s was a very homogeneous and white society but there were a handful of groundbreaking bands that included both
An interesting snippet of music history highlighting how Ireland hasn’t always just been white.
I’ve brought home some of my CDs with me, and dad has a CD player in his car so I’ve been giving him one a week (I’ve only been home a week) to listen to. Romance has sadly not worked on him, on the strength of four songs—he’s made it to Desire—it’s ’too slow’ for him. Sad.
Which newish Irish band that I have on CD do I subject him to next
Kneecap - Fine Art
Sprints - Letter To Self
Stick with Fontaines. Fontaines D.C. - Dogrel
No Inhaler CDs on hand, soz. Take your pick, he listens to your pick for the next week
white boy of the century
The beauty of dumping a bunch of songs into a “to be used” folder is that you can forget what’s in there until you open it up and give it an appraisal. “What’s in here that captured my attention?” The band ‘Sprints’ from Dublin, Ireland was sitting in there with ‘How Does The Story Go?” That build up that hits around the 1:36 mark greeted me cathartically. Screaming, “I’m not fine!” seems a fitting theme for many of the lives of folk I know. Why lie and adorn yourself with a pleasant mask when the inevitable cannot be denied? Who has time for polite guises and the demands of etiquette when existence decides to treat you poorly? Why not just let yourself be raw and honest and open? We’re all in the same condition and we’re all headed for the same end. Recognize your own fragility and dependencies and learn to recognize the same in those around you. They are you and you are them and nobody gets out alive. “What dreams may come”, sure but first you gotta live. So live. Imperfectly and flawed but vibrantly and without apology. (Or don’t. You do you. I’m just riffing here on a feeling.)
