Meet Ireland's OG vampire who makes Dracula look like a dental hygiene enthusiast! The Abhartach—Ireland's answer to "what if we made bloodsuckers even MORE terrifying?" 🧛‍♂️🩸

This pint-sized tyrant (short king before it was trendy) terrorized Northern Ireland long before Instagram filters. A cruel dwarf chieftain with magical powers and a temper shorter than his stature, Abhartach had a nasty habit of returning from the dead when his subjects tried to, ahem, "terminate his employment."

After being killed and buried, he'd rise again the next day, demanding bowls of blood from his people's veins to sustain his undead lifestyle. Talk about a demanding boss! 🥣

The solution? A warrior named Cathain finally put him down permanently with a sword of yew wood, buried him upside down, and topped his grave with thorns. Medieval problem-solving at its finest! 🗡⚰️

Some say Bram Stoker borrowed this tale for a little book called "Dracula"—though Abhartach would definitely leave a one-star review for stealing his brand.

Continuing our "Dark Irish Lore" series, we return to the haunting tale of the Dearg Due ("Red Blood Sucker") – Ireland's own vampire legend born from tragedy and vengeance. 👰‍♀️🩸

Beneath her mesmerizing beauty lies a story of profound sorrow. Beloved by a poor young man, she was forced by her father to marry a sadistic, wealthy chieftain who coveted her beauty as a possession. Locked away in his estate, she suffered daily cruelties while her true love mourned helplessly outside the walls.

As her spirit broke, so did her body. She died of a broken heart – but her rage couldn't be contained by the grave. On the first full moon after her burial, she emerged with supernatural strength, her first victims being her father and husband. Their blood restored her beauty, but awakened an unquenchable thirst. 💔🌕

Now she wanders the night, using her ethereal appearance to lure men, particularly those who mistreat women, before draining them dry. The only protection against her? Placing stones on her grave in a practice called "cairning" – each stone representing a prayer that might keep her bound. 💃

Local folklore warns that she's most powerful on the anniversary of her death, when even the heaviest stones might not contain her fury. 🪨
