do you really think that tea leoni might have a crush on me
No.
Well--- give me one good reason I should show up work with drawn on whiskers, and I might just consider doing so.
[ her smile is noticeable over the phone line, of course, but she doesn't much mind. mulder has only been gone from their office for a few minutes, half and hour at most--
already, she finds him on the other line. he doesn't say i miss you, but his hey, scully, i just walked by a halloween store works just as well. ]

Of course no one would hear her out. S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Paranormal Investigations department was a glorified time-out center for ill-behaved agents. Step out of line one too many times and you'd suddenly find yourself working the P.I. circuit, interviewing drunken idiots who swore they'd been anally probed by Martians or had sexual intercourse with a ghost. No one expected anything to come of these cases. And truth be told, Evelyn's own expectations were aligned with that. These weren't the types of missions that produced leads worth pursuing.
And yet this time, something had. Not that anyone cared.
So began the search for a listening ear -- whether from within the confines of S.H.I.E.L.D. or not. Through her inquiries and all the mockery that came with them, a single ray of hope managed to shine through the shit storm -- one man's name repeated throughout many a conversation. A former FBI agent who truly believed in the impossible, arguably to the point of insanity.
Fox Mulder
It had taken a bit of digital stalking (and one too many favors promised to some personnel down in Database Management) but she was able to depart for D.C. before midday with an address in hand. The apartment she knew of wasn't listed under his name, but rather his former partner Dana Scully's. Retired or not, second-hand accounts didn't paint Mulder as the type to walk away from his work. And if Evelyn was right, this could very well be the biggest case he'd ever see.
After all she'd gone through just to have someone listen, she still hesitated to knock on the door. Knuckles danced on the wood finish briefly before her hands retreated the leather strap of her messenger bag. Nervous eyes studied the unopened door, growing wider once she heard the distinct sound of rustling inside. Someone was home.
