sunnydale is the funniest place to me. it's this rinky-dinky little town in the middle of nowhere, except its got a whole-ass uc and a bunch of mansions and abandoned warehouses and enough room for multiple cemeteries and at least one beach and a downtown with a whole strip of clubs and bars - we're informed that the bronze is the only place to hang in s1, but thats clearly not the case by the time buffy is stalking spike in s7 - and fancy apartment buildings and sleazy motels and an airport and a secret military base and woods and an abandoned spanish mission and its own chain of fast food burger joints and a bunch of churches and at least one nice, romantic french restaurant. i'm probably forgetting some stuff. and its also like an hour or so from l.a. and not too far from what's pretty clearly joshua tree.

imo i do think spike getting his soul was so important to the spuffy storyline bc buffy shouldn't and couldn't be spike's moral compass for the rest of his or her existence. and she WAS. in s5 and s6, she WAS. he was basing everything he did on whether buffy would be mad or sad if he did it, not whether it was inherently a moral thing to do. don't get me wrong, that's light-years better than most soulless vamps would ever do, better than a lot of humans, but it's still not GOOD. Once Again i think btvs' issue with the souls is NOT that they did too much with them but they did not do ENOUGH with them, they should have genuinely explored spike's guilt and insanity and his moral struggle. but i would have possibly been the only one who wanted to see that
