Hey tumblr, why do you look like this?

Why have my blog block, blog search, post edit, post delete, ect, all gone into hiding behind the dots?

Why do you feel wrong rn, like my mobile hellsite app switched itself out for a doppleganger who actually sucks at his job. You're not fooling anybody buddy.

The font, the icons, everything is wrong. Not unrecognizable, but just enough to have me questioning myself and being uncomfy.

How to write trans characters-from a trans person

ok so ive seen alot of these ‘how to write trans characters’ posts and videos floating about, but they never actually say how to write trans characters. Usually its just ‘write them like every other character!’(or vaguely transphobic) but thats not the *real* question writers are asking. Sure some benefit from that advice, but many just want a respectful way to write about a character with a life experience they don't have. So, heres my crack at it.  (Note this is a heavily transmasc influenced advice, so its definitely not all encompassing )

Figure out if your story has the language or facilities for trans folk

This might not be obvious, (or extremely obvious idk), but in my experience, writers forgot to think about that. Does your world even have words like ‘trans’ or ‘non binary’? Can your character only socially transition, or is there a medical possibility? Are they allowed to be publicly trans, or is it a secretive thing. This is *extremely* important if you are doing your own world building. If your worried, dont be, in my experience it just not having your medieval world with limited medical knowledge have a character on hrt. 

If your doing a contemporary story its much easier, as long as you know the countries/regions/cultures opinion on trans folk for the story your writing. *Especially* with a pov trans character. 

Where are they at?

Not all trans folk go on hormones, not everybody binds or tucks. Is this important for most stories, probably not, but be aware if a scene come ups where you believe it is relevant.  Again this will be the most important for a pov character. Also are they out? When you are writing a explicitly trans character, its important to know if the people around them know they are trans. Whether they are pre or post transition, this can help characterization. Only if its relevant of course. 

What about subtext?

Ok, no judgement, not all stories can have explicit trans characters. Hell not all stories should. So how does one do it? Here's a few examples:

Drop in a causal line about being on hrt (ie how they hate the needles, they have to be careful because they just applied cream, or have them take the medication in text)

Do the good old fashion ‘cool name’ ‘thanks i picked it myself’ 

Have them have trans pins or pronoun pins. 

and finally, my personal favorite, have them complain about having to do athletic activity while binding.

But what if this is too explicit.  Sometimes you have Disney level censorship.  Or maybe you dont feel completely comfortable writing trans character. honestly i dont know how to help you. at some point subtext becomes so watered down your intention is lost. Or even worse, you’ll fall to stereotype to convey what you want. but  ‘cool name’ ‘thanks i picked it myself’ could work. 

As always, remember, get advice from trans people, whether in real life or online. Make sure to use beta or sensitivity reader who Are Trans. Also if your character is a trans, be sure to have a sensitivity reader/beta who has that identity. I am not qualified to tell you whether or not your transfemme character is offensive, but I sure can do that for a transmasc one.
