Never let it be said that Isabelle Lightwood was not an observant woman, especially when it came to her family. She loved her brothers fiercely and knew when something was wrong with them. So she noticed the signs when Alec began to change. There were subtle little hints to his persona and the amount of time he spent on his own, thinking. It took her a bit since she wasn't sure what it was exactly, but the moment she saw Alec around Magnus again, she realized what the truth was. And the thought delighted her. Alec deserved to be happy.
Okay so this is technically Malec but it is an outside POV. Still counts, right? LOL. Day 23 of my self-imposed September Drabbles challenge. The word of the day is Sign, and the challenge list can be found here if you’re curious to see it. Thank you!!
I’m struggling a little bit with the weird thing so I went looking to see if I could pilfer something I’ve already written from my unfinished bits, as you do.
At one point, I was going to do an Izzy POV of Leave Before the Lights Come On until I realised I’d have to re-jig the sex and ain’t nobody got time for that, so no.
As it happens, I’m not unhappy with this snippet and it’s really not a million miles away from the theme of the new thing, in my head at least. Think of it as a precursor, or a reference point, or don’t think of it at all.
I figured it may as well go here as anywhere, besides, posting it makes me feel like I’m accomplishing something.
Who knows, I may still steal some of this from myself for the weird thing, giving proper credit, of course.
It’s the last day of term and Chop’s browbeaten some poor div with an empty into throwing a party. There are people everywhere, a lot of whom Izzy’s never seen before. Lots of pretty new girls, every one of them her potential downfall, and Chop’s right in there, giving it plenty, hoping to at least get some.
Izzy had wanted to go the pub, just the four of them, but Chop wore them all down. He is relentless in his pursuit of pleasure; the next laugh, the next buzz, the next conquest. Izzy knows Archie and Finn don’t particularly want to be here either but it’s what you do for your mates, isn’t it?
At the pub, her odds are better. ‘Course, there are other girls there, but Chop’s either had them or been knocked back by them and either way, Chop is always looking forward; always looking for new worlds to conquer. What she can’t figure out is how he constantly fails to see the fresh, unchartered, willing world desperate to be discovered and explored right under his nose.
She doesn’t know too many people here tonight, but she smiles and nods at the people she does know as she completes a circuit of the house. She visits the kitchen and grabs another drink, she scouts the bedrooms, looking for someone to talk to. She hovers outside the bathroom door, listening in on Anna Harris and some other girl giggling over some guy. It’s probably Finn. Izzy hurries on past the door, careful to make sure Anna doesn’t see her. It hadn’t taken long to figure out that Anna had only started hanging with Izzy because she thought it would get her closer to Finn. But Finn wasn’t even remotely interested and that put an end to Anna’s interest in Izzy. He’d been so pissed off when Izzy had told him. He’d run his thumbs under her eyes to wipe the tears that threatened to spill and said ‘well, she can just go fuck herself because there’s no way I’m going to,’ before wrapping her up in one of his patented, fix-everything bear hugs. “Besides, there’s only room in this gang for one girl… and that’s Chop!”
Normally, in these situations, Finn and Arch stick together. There’s always a flock of girls around them desperate to be chosen, and the boys, depending on the mood, will act as buffer or champion, whereas Chop prefers to hunt alone. Some bullshit about lone wolves or some such, he says. It’s all well and good for them, Izzy thinks, they get to pick and choose but it makes for a lonely life being the only girl in the gang of four. There’s not been a boy yet brave enough to breach the human shield the three of them form around her, so Izzy remains a princess locked in a tower, invisible to her three best friends and untouchable to the rest of the world. Most days she can convince herself that it’s kind of sweet, the way they look out for her, but then there are times like now, when she’s on her third alcopop of the evening and every dark corner she walks past is alive with the urgent push and pull of bodies wrapped serpentine around each other, her ears full of disgustingly overly-wet snogging and embarrassing groaning with no hope on the horizon that she’ll be on the receiving end of any of it and she thinks the three of them know exactly what they’re doing. It’s all a conspiracy to keep her the county’s only virgin. It has to be their fault because if it’s not, that means it hers. She’s not pretty enough, not sexy enough. Not enough of anything.
She swings through the hallway on her way to somewhere else, preparing to spend the night all wound up and pissed off with the lot of them, when she spots him sitting by himself in the half-dark of a tiny sitting room just off the kitchen.
He looks as fed-up and bored as she feels, huffing and grumbling to himself – probably about the shitty music – and she smiles. She can’t help it. He’s her Finny and she can never stay mad at him. If anything is going to drag her out of this shitty mood, it will be him. Finn won’t let her stay miserable for long. He has an uncanny knack of knowing how to cheer her up.
