Almeida Júnior - Girl with a Book, between 1850 and 1899, oil on canvas José Ferraz de Almeida Júnior (1850 – 1899) was a Brazilian artist and designer. Júnior enjoyed painting the people and their lifestyle of regional Brazil. Júnior's career began when the head priest of Church of Our Lady of Candelária in Itu recognised Júnior's talent and raised money for him to study at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts (1869). After completing his studies, Júnior returned to Itu and set up a studio. In 1876, Emperor Pedro II was so impressed with Júnior's work that he provided financial support, enabling Júnior to study in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts. Junior eventually returned to Brazil in 1882 where he opened a studio in São Paulo and taught art privately.
