2009 : RADIO PLAYS & AUDIOBOOKS
During 2009, Toby once more lent his dulcet tones to a number of Radio Plays:
In January 2009, the BBC World Service broadcast James Elroy’s ‘My Dark Places’, dramatised by Steve Chambers.
Superficially the book was just another detective story revolving around the author’s quest to find out who murdered his mother when he was ten years old. This adaptation is set in two historical periods: in 1958 when the murder occurred and the mid 1990’s when Ellroy returned to his past to find out what happened. In this adaptation, the grown up Ellroy is played by Toby.
On 15 March, BBC Radio 7 broadcast an the 2003 recording of ‘Dionysios’, the retelling of Greek myth with the late Paul Schofield, Diana Rigg, Chiwetel Ejofor and of course, Toby.
Despite the stellar cash, Radio Drama Reviews wrote that “The cast did what they could, but the script defeated them.”
Charles Chilton, now in his 90’s, created one of the most exciting and influential radio shows of all time, ‘Journey into Space’ in the 1950’s, and his latest adventure “The Host” was broadcast on Radio 4 during 2009.
Toby, ("the only man alive who could play both Dan Dare and Harry Flashman")fresh from his triumph as the camp madman Prince John in BBC1‘s Robin Hood, plays the role of dynamic Captain Jet Morgan.
In October we heard Toby in Jean Anouilh’s play about the relationship between Henry II and the man he appoints as Archbishop with Toby taking the role of Henry opposite David Morrissey’s Becket, broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
As well as the Radio Plays, Toby lent his voice to an audio book, as narrator of 'King Solomon’s Mines', an unabridged reading of H. Rider Haggard’s famous book.
