At the Drop of an Apple, it’s Almost Time to Welcome the Fall Season
Gillian Armstrong, on behalf of the New Jersey Apple Industry Advisory Council
With the end of summer approaching quickly, its time to start thinking about sweeping up those sandy beach bags and firing up the grill one last time before entering the spirit of autumn. In only a few short weeks pumpkin spice will be making it's appearance at your local coffee shop, schools will be back in session, and most importantly, apples, our favorite fall fruits will be making their way back into our kitchens. After a very long, difficult year of managing and preparing the orchards, farmers are thrilled to announce another great season will be here before we know it.
Jersey apple growers are especially excited about opening their doors this year to the 2016 apple season come September. “It’s been a year full of extra work and hope, but were ready!” says farmer Pete Johnson of Burlington County.
This year, mild winter weather patterns caused early budding for many fruit trees that were later followed by on-going waves of bitter cold temperatures. These unpredictable sets of weather conditions took a major toll on fruit blossoms, making the 2016 season very susceptible to high levels of loss. In effort to combat against such threatening circumstances, Jersey growers had to take extreme measures of defense in hopes to save their 2016 crop. This April, with temperatures dropping below 30 degrees farmers were found dragging irrigation lines, hoses, and sprinklers into the orchard to spray water over the trees during all hours of the night. When applying this irrigation method farmers use the energy released from the water when it freezes to keep the temperature of the ice at a constant 32 degrees, providing a thermal layer for a budding plant. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and Department of Agriculture worked collaboratively to allow farmers to utilize this and other methods of protection including controlled, open burnings or specialized torches known as “smudge pots” to protect the livelihood of New Jersey fruit growers. While these methods seemed to have been helping, fruit growers held their breath for weeks as they waited out the cold to predict the impact of the 2016 crop.

It was because of long hours, hard work and collaboration that farmers were able to overcome the unsettling spring, and ensure a bountiful apple season this autumn. This September, apple growers are relieved to report another great season will be here with high volumes and large assortments for consumers to enjoy.
