The square root of (5 – 9/2)2  is ± (5 - 9/2). The above proof assumes the positive value, which is false in this instance. 

Using the negative value, the paradox disappears. 

 (5 – 9/2)2 = (4 – 9/2)2    - 5 + 9/2 = 4 – 9/2                  9 = 4 + 5
