‘I had cancer… I just want to give you a hug’: Princess of Wales shares moving moment with pop star Jessie J, who recently finished treatment

The Princess of Wales shared a moving conversation with Jessie J as she joined Prince William for a triumphant showing at the Royal Variety Performance.
Catherine was holding court following the starry night of songs and comedy when she crossed paths with the ‘Price Tag’ singer, and the pair bonded over motherhood and their recent health battles.
‘I just had breast cancer,’ said Jessie J, whose real name is Jessica Cornish. ‘I just want to give you a hug; cancer really puts life into perspective.’
The pair shared a warm embrace in what was clearly an emotional moment for both women. Reflecting on the conversation afterwards, the singer explained:
‘Mum to mum, who has just recently gone through cancer, I just wanted to give her a hug.’
Cornish, 37, was diagnosed with early breast cancer in June and started sharing her treatment journey with her fans.
‘Cancer sucks in any form, but I’m holding on to the word “early”,’ she said in a video message at the time.
‘I just wanted to be open and share it,’ she explained, ‘because selfishly, I do not talk about it enough. I’m not processing it because I’m working so hard.
‘I also know how much sharing in the past has helped me with other people giving me their love and support, and also their own stories.
I'm an open book. It breaks my heart that so many people are going through so much similar and worse – that's the bit that kills me.’
The singer went on to tell her fans ‘I need a hug.’
Fortunately, tests following a mastectomy in July showed no spread of the disease, and although Cornish had to pull out of a tour in order to undergo a second round of surgery, fans will have been relieved to see her in high spirits at the Royal Variety Performance.
