Virginia Beach
Being born and raised in Virginia Beach, it's easy to normalize the existence of Mount Trashmore in your head. It's just the place you go as a kid to fly kites, or to roll down till you puke, or to be deeply moved by patrio-fascist pyrotechnic displays set to that godawful Lee Greenwood song. But when you give it a second of thought, it is quite fitting symbolism that the highest point in this shitty little town is literally a heap of garbage. A friend who hailed from New Jersey told me that her first impression of our fair city was "really sleazy." Contemplate that for a moment. A person who calls New York's heroin-addled little brother home finds our city notably trashy. I can't say I disagree. There are four sex shops within biking distance of my house. While I've never been the type to accessorize my sexuality, so I can't personally comment on selection, I must say it's nice to know they're there, should I ever need them.
With or without my patronage, such businesses thrive in Virginia Beach thanks to our amazing new mayor, Will Sessoms, who misses no opportunity to tell us how "pro-business" he is. While to a person like me, the phrase "pro-business" has about the same ring to it as "Nazi Germany" or "Hepatitis C," the platitude was for Sessoms just enough to get the the working class to vote for its own evisceration. These same people will no doubt vote down light rail in this coming election, because as several astute PilotOnline commenters have observed, cheap public transit would bring "urban" people to the Beach. (Pro-tip for the literal-minded: "urban" means "black.") Besides, investing in infrastructure would be socialism, pure and simple. It's far more American for it to take a twenty minute drive to get fucking anywhere, assuming you have a car. The Beach is a great example of what you get when you don't plan a city at all, and rather just allow business and development to metastasize into a hideous sprawl of suburbs, strip malls, and 7-11s. Fortunately, we'll soon be a real city, with a real downtown. Apparently with the idea that you can just arbitrarily designate a downtown area in an otherwise random, decentralized and fully developed city, our leaders have built a couple flaccid skyscrapers and declared it "Town Center." My only consolation is that they avoided the pretentious misspelling that Hampton's Towne (sic) Center fell prey to.
But the worst thing about VB, by a wide margin, is the military presence. The drunken squids who'll call you "faggot" for riding a bike are bad enough, but far more pervasive and infuriating is the jet noise and the general attitude towards it. To most residents, in a turn of phrase that would make Orwell wince, the constant screaming of fighters and bombers is "the sound of freedom." If you have a problem with 100 decibels of freedom drowning out your every thought five times a day, you hate America and need to, as an actual sign on the boulevard instructs, "go back where you came from." It's good we're keeping our jets in tip-top shape though, considering all the advanced air powers we've been to war with the past half century. Irony aside, I guess somebody's got to bomb the civilian infrastructure, not to mention the civilians themselves, and practice does make perfect. I should keep that in mind next time a 3 million dollar death machine goes roaring overhead, while I pay $500 a month to a private insurer just to maintain my very sanity. We've got priorities, people.
