How Ebony & Jet Rewrote Black History—One Cover at a Time 🖤
Ebony was a mirror. Jet was a megaphone. From Emmett Till’s truth to Maya Angelou’s joy, Johnson Publishing showed Black America its brilliance when no one else would. 40 % of Black homes. 5 million images saved by the Smithsonian. They didn’t just change magazines—they changed the mirror.

#tbt Jet magazine. And LA Law, which I’ve never seen in syndication or streaming (though I haven’t looked). A law school binge which portrayed law firms with far more glamour and sizzle than reality. In fact, law firms are the opposite of glamour and sizzle. But it was fun to watch. #Repost @vintagejetmagazines with @get_repost ・・・ Blair Underwood and Corbin Berson. It's hard to believe L.A. In 1956, Dorothy Dandridge told Jet magazine that her New Year’s resolution was "to endeavor in my own small way to widen horizons for others of my race, to try sincerely to be a credit to my people at all times."
If we don’t step up to preserve our history, it could be erased. It’s always good to see those who have the means do what they can to help maintain their story and our story. #Repost @blackenterprise with @get_repost ・・・ Business titan @MellodyHobson and her husband, Star Wars filmmaker George Lucas, filed a court motion seeking control of the Ebony and Jet archives just weeks after the magazines’ former owner, Johnson Publishing Co. (JPC), filed for bankruptcy. According to The Wall Street Journal, the power couple is seeking to take control of the magazines’ archives, which contain thousands of historic photos and recordings of African American people, culture, and events. JPC filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy earlier this month, putting the magazines’ collection of iconic footage, chronicling more than 70 years of African American life, in jeopardy. The archives include original photos of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his funeral, Rosa Parks, Muhammad Ali, Langston Hughes, and Maya Angelou. It also includes photos taken of Emmett Till’s 1955 funeral along with a host of images published during the civil rights movement. . . . . . #jetmagazine #ebony #blackhistory #ebonymagazine #blackexcellence #blacklivesmatter #africanamerican #blackculture #blackenterprise #mellodyhobson #georgelucas #starwars #johnsonpublishing https://www.instagram.com/bigbabarob/p/BwwXFaHhhpX/?igshid=1bvnvwnr4nh84
Moneta Sleet was an Pulitizer Prize winning photojournalist heavily involved in the civil rights movement. Documenting the struggles and accomplishments of people of color. He produced work on many different topics. Some of the people above may look familiar you to .. well that’s because Sleet also continued working for Ebony and Jet magazine which were magazines dedicated to black beauty.
