1831 Nat Turner Insurrection was the 1st battle of the Civil War, War Between the States or most accurately the War Against Slavery (WAS). The 2nd battle was John Brown’s 1859 raid on Harper’s Ferry.  And the final battle came at the end of Reconstruction in 1877.

And speaking of revolutions...

Today is the 162nd anniversary of the start of the Raid at Harper's Ferry. Which is pretty cool. 

In summary: John Brown, "hero" of the abolitionist movement at Bloody Kansas, decides to take one for the team and start a slave revolt in Virginia (West Virginia did not become a state until the Civil War). Along with 21 men and his daughter, Annie, he traveled down to Harper's Ferry under an assumed name and pretended to be a farmer. Meanwhile, he and his men scouted out the area around the government arsenal. They attempted a raid, but were trapped in the firehouse. Surrounded by government troops led by Lt. Col. Robert E. Lee, they surrendered. The whole "raid" took three days, ending on October 18.

Brown was imprisoned, tried, and summarily hanged for treason against the state of Virginia. His death became a rallying point for the abolitionist movement. It also pushed the nation towards Civil War.

So, way to go, John Brown... I suppose. You definitely made it into the history books. 

Also: one of the men shot in the raid was cut up by the townspeople and fed to the pigs. They said it was the best sausage they'd ever had.
