Interview With The Curator Of SHUNGA Exhibition | インタビュー

John Klukas interest for shunga brought him back to the Hosomi Museum, where the artist was able to interview its curator.

After visiting the Hosomi Museum in order to see the travelling exhibition ‘Shunga-ten’, the first exhibition on erotic prints and paintings in Japan, he started to read the exhibition’s catalogue carefully. It made him reflect on the historical background of the era when the prints were made and on changes within the spirit of the Japanese people at the time, which can be noticed in the way how compositions and characters were drawn in these.

ANEWAL Gallery answered his request to speak with an expert about his questions and conclusions that derived from his studies of shunga by arranging an interview with the one of curators of the Hosomi Museum.

During the interview, questions on a wide variety of topics were being discussed: starting with the status of shunga in contemporary Japan, the significance of the shunga exhibition, the cultural differences between Japan nowadays and the Japan of the Edo period (when most shunga were being made), followed by questions about foreign influences after the arrival of the ‘black ships’ such as the influence of the Christian religion on the country. Then, the conversation shifted to topics such as the gender of the creator of the erotic prints, the production of shunga in relationship to the low birth rate of Japan and the Japanese culture of ‘haji’ (shame).

The curator of the Hosomi Museum, who was so kind to cooperate with this interview, was surprised by the extent of in-depth research that the artist had done on shunga, Japanese history and Japanese culture. In this way, the interview was not only an occasion for John to ask questions to the curator, but also to develop his own arguments towards the topic. This led to a sharp discussion that amazed even the curator of the Hosomi Museum, famous for its prominent Japanese art collection, and engaged him to listen to John’s argumentation with deep attention.

Taking into consideration that the research of shunga remains insufficient in Japan, the interview became a valuable occasion whereby both parties carrying different cultural backgrounds were able to converse and exchange their opinions freely towards each other, encountering many surprises and new discoveries on the way.

Finally, we would hereby like to express our gratitude towards the Hosomi Museum for making this interview possible as well as for inviting John Klukas to the opening reception of the museum’s next exhibition named “Hiroshi Sugimoto: Art and Leisure”.

春画に興味を持ったJohn Klukasはキュレータにインタビューを行う為、再び細見美術館を訪ねました。

先日、日本で初となる春画展の京都巡回展を見るべく細見美術館を訪れたJohn Klukasはその後、丹念に図録を読み、制作年代や時代背景、構図や登場人物の描かれ方などに見る日本人の精神性の変遷について考察しました。 その中で沸いた疑問や結論を専門家に問いたいと言う要望を受けたANEWAL Galleryは、細見美術館 学芸員のインタビューを設定しました。

その質問は現代日本における春画の位置付け、春画展開催の意義、江戸期を中心とした春画が最も盛んに制作された時代と現代の文化的な差異、キリスト教や黒船来航の影響、作家の性別、果ては低い出生率との関係、日本の恥の文化との関係など多岐に渡りました。

インタビューに応じて戴いたキュレータの方も驚くほどに、John Klukasは春画と日本の歴史や文化について調査しこのインタビューに臨んでいました。また質問するだけではなくそれに対する独自の考えも展開しその考察は屈指の日本美術コレクションを持つ細見美術館のキュレータでさえも驚くほどに鋭く、思わず聞きいる場面もありました。

日本においても春画研究はまだまだ十分とは言えないからこそ、異なる文化圏の者同士が自由に語り合い、意見を交換しお互いに驚きと発見のあるとても貴重な機会になりました。

今回快くインタビューに応じていただいた細見美術館は後日、次の展覧会「杉本博司展」のオープニングレセプションにJohn Klukasを招待いただくなど大変お世話になりありがとうございました。

AN AIR vol.1 : John Klukas

NPO ANEWAL Gallery invites American artist John Klukas to be the first participant in the Artist in Residence program, AN AIR. During his residency period, ANEWAL Gallery will support the research of John Klukas, while also offering an exhibition space and accommodation.

Currently active in New York and Bangkok, John Klukas began  working as an artist after graduating from university, where he majored in psychology. His works can be understood as 'psychological portraits'. These ‘portraits’ are informed by an investigation of cultural norms and the ancient myths that have influenced them and how they create the foundation for our personal narratives.

His works focus on stories examining 'the self' and are intended to act as a mirror to powerfully reflect universal psychological phenomena through stories of light and shadows, hope and despair and life and death.

During his residency period, John Klukas works to gain a personal understanding of the ancient stories that are used to construct the psychological norms of Japanese culture and Japanese people as well as the visual arts that are an expression of these stories.

Finally, at the end of his residency, John Klukas will hold his first solo exhibition in Japan at ANEWAL Gallery. The exhibition, titled 'Call Of The Void', along with ANEWAL Gallery will be included in KG+2016, the satellite event of the International Photography Festival Kyoto Graphie.

John Klukas (b. 1981) was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. After receiving his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Minnesota, his interest in pursuing photography brought him first to Bangkok, Thailand and then to New York City.

After spending nearly a decade working primarily in fashion photography, Klukas now focuses his energies on Fine Art photography and three-dimensional images in the form of sculpture.

それは鏡のように見るもの自身の物語を呼び覚まし、光と影、希望と絶望、生と死といった心理的境界を力強く鮮やかに可視化します。

ジョン・クルカスは滞在期間中、日本文化と日本人の心理的規範を形作る古い寓話やまたその表出としてのビジュアルアーツを調査します。

また本滞在の最後には日本での初個展となる展覧会をANEWAL Galleryにて開催、京都国際写真祭 KYOTO GRAPHIEのサテライトイベント KG+ 2016にANEWAL Galleryと共に参加致します。

1981年 ミネソタ州セントポール生まれ。ミネソタ大学で心理学を専攻後、写真への興味からタイ バンコク、そしてニューヨークに移り住む。

10年間ファッション写真を主に活動した後、現在は芸術表現としての写真と彫刻の立体イメージとしての形態に注視し作家活動を行っている。
