watched treasure planet the other day and never realized this is how they credited the actors and lead animators... i love it. really emphasizes how the animators and voice actors are two halves of one performance

okay i will say the one bit of disco elysium fanon that does drive me up the wall is harry initiating physical touch and affection with others. harry du bois, who has to be INVITED to engage in physical touch with others, with the exception of violence, depicted as the touchy-feely one... any other time he's in contact with anyone else he is not the one initiating

#and in particular this grinds my gears with kimharry. kim is the one touching HARRY not the other way around #in good faith i think its just. stereotypical to make harry the one to do so #in bad faith its racism making kim be the stoic #jonnie's thoughts #disco elysium

i think i've crystalized further some of my... i don't want to say gripes but perhaps? disappointments? with the disco elysium genderswap art (and i say art because who knows, maybe there's fic out there that addresses these issues) that i have seen:

i refuse to believe that kim "i'm just a garden variety revacholière" kitsuragi would be butch, or at the very least butch on the job. not because the idea doesn't appeal to me, mind, but because kim yearns so, so desperately to comform. if we're going by what the game presents to us with harry (the leopard bodysuit...), it'd be harriet who'd be the soon-to-be butch of the two of them.

we see with judit minot (and comments from rené as well as some esprit de corps checks) that policemen outnumber policewomen in the RCM, and that they face intense sexist scrutiny from both other officers and members of the public. i don't mean to suggest that it makes the genderswap au improbable (we know that women can even achieve captaincy in the RCM), but rather that harriet and kim's relationship to the organization would fundamentally be different as a result.

there's a startling dearth of application of the political quests to miss harriet... not entirely unsurprising given most people tend to default harry to communist as is, but it would be fascinating to see analysis of revacholian fascism as it manifests in women through the genderswap au, for instance.

the popular interpretation tends to have harriet dating a still-female dora, which while interesting kind of boggles my mind a little. harry is so clearly repressing his bisexuality that i don't know why a harriet wouldn't be either? it just seems like another misunderstanding of the text-- it took an almost complete and total unbecoming before harry could begin to reckon with his bisexuality. why wouldn't the same be the case for harriet? it also seems like a missed opportunity to reflect on how class is ultimately what tore them apart through a new lens; imagine a male dora who instead of having the abortion himself pressures harriet to have one instead... not to mention their age gap would have likely received more scrutiny, too.

which, also, case in point-- every woman we see harry hit on at the very least appears younger than he is. this is marginally acceptable given he's a man; how would lilienne and klaasje react as men being hit on by an older woman in harriet? would kim be inclined to chastise her more harshly, too (because surely a female kim would be carrying around some intense internalized sexism)?

i have an appetite for silly fandom/shippy stuff, too, mind, but with a game so cerebral and meaty as disco elysium it's kind of sad to not see this level of reflection applied when some of the characters are made women...

hi guys. i'm sure you've seen a million aid posts already from me alone, but i need to highlight a particular campaign. falestine ( @falestine-yousef84 - vetted here) has reached out to me personally and i must do what i can to advocate for her. i unfortunately do not have the means to donate to her any more than i have -- please, if you do, help her and her son youssef. winter is going to be a serious threat to her and the health of her baby, among the ongoing threat of military action in her area.
