Day 320
Many moments of gratitude today. For no particular reason other than the picture looked pretty and it sounded like a good idea, I made Rainbow Sprinkle Cake.
Making the crumb coat by putting a thin layer of frosting all around, putting in fridge for a bit, then easily sliding on the rest of the frosting:
Dang, that was a good idea. So fun to make, including reading all the comments, and adjusting it to how it would suit me (i.e. less sugar in the batter and cutting the frosting in half). We loved this around four o’clock today. Ethan had just come in from another round of shoveling snow in the neighborhood (bringing his cash flow for today up to $50).
I was not happy with Gabriel earlier. There was Ethan, outside in the front yard building a snowman, for Pete’s sake. He was being a kid again! He was getting fresh air! And Gabe was sitting in front of the TV playing a football video game. I told him to go join his brother. “When this is OVER!” he said. It looked like it was over. I stood in front of the screen blocking his view. He kind of laughed, but didn’t didn’t move until I said that I was getting Billy. (Sadly, that usually works. I wish he’d just listen to me though.) He got up from the couch, I told him to go outside, he said, “NO!” And then I yelled. Not a long yell (this time anyway). Just an exasperated one. I told him how crazy it makes me when he doesn’t make good decisions. He has not done any outside exercise in days.
When Ethan came inside, he wanted Gabe to see his snowman. It was truly a sweet moment. That got Gabe out of his room. I was kind of surprised, but I guess Ethan wanting attention from his little brother means something to Gabe.
Meanwhile, back in the kitchen, this mom was frosting her Rainbow Cake. The boys came inside, Ethan said he was going to go on a run, and Gabe (shockingly) said that he would, too. “When do we get to eat that cake, Mom?” Ethan wanted to know. I was just finishing the frosting so responded by saying, “Right now.” I handed them both a slice. They ate it in their rooms, told me it was very good, then they both got dressed for a run. I loved watching them take off at a slow pace down the street together.
Off they go.
