June Worldbuilders: Day 6

Monsters can be summoned or controlled through invocations. These are typically said in a profane language that humans shouldn't naturally be able to speak, and require deep heretical knowledge to even comprehend. Such knowledge can only be gained through occult texts.

June Worldbuilders: Day 10

As it happens, there are a few songs of note mentioned in my upcoming book Throneseeker. Perhaps the most notable is "Defenders of Dhesa," played as a war march when Dhesan soldiers/Branded go into battle.

There's also "Drifting Clouds," a lullaby pretty well-known across Theryl. It's a very simple, sweet melody about the clouds, and how their shape, appearance and contents are ever-changing...

June Worldbuilders: Day 8

Honestly, a lot of the most famous artworks in Theryl depict famous people or events; rulers, warriors, and of course, Seekers and their deeds. I've never really included any majorly specific examples in my books, you can probably assume that most of my protagonists have paintings or works of art dedicated to them or their deeds that have been passed down after their deaths. Tales like Drey's journey to save the sun bird or Adelle's many adventures across Theryl have been captured by artists either during or after their lifetimes.

June Worldbuilders: Day 5

Monsters in Theryl exist for the sole purpose of bringing death and destruction. They will generally lash out at any living thing insight (save for each other) and can even cause damage to the environment just by existing.

That being said, sorcerers can control monsters to an extent with certain spells. It's impossible to reign them in completely, but a monster's destructive urges can at least be directed toward specific targets if one is versed enough in occult knowledge to command them.

There are many types of monsters in Theryl, but the oldest and most powerful of them are known as Terrorbeasts. These creatures are feared not only for their immense strength, but also their higher-than-average intellect. In fact, some Terrorbeasts are even capable of speech...

Terrorbeasts are, thankfully, extremely rare. When one does appear, however, it's said that nothing short of a small army or the power of a Seeker can bring it down.

Nobody is actually sure of the exact process regarding how monsters are made. All anyone knows is that they are spawned in the underworld and sent into Theryl through the power of wicked magic. Of course, there is a process, but that will remain mysterious for now...

June Worldbuilders: Day 1

The closest things to demons in Theryl are the Shayta and the monsters they spawn. The Shayta are ancient, immeasurably powerful beings whose strength rivals that of the Divines. They remain largely trapped in the underworld, but can influence the mortal realm...

The chief ways in which Shayta do this is by spawning monsters. Monsters can have a variety of appearances and powers, but typically look like horrific amalgamations of animals and/or plants, sometimes with random materials attached to them. No one is wholly sure how monsters are spawned...
